They were the most commercially successful country act in the 1980s and remain one of the bestselling American musical acts of all time. The band is often credited with bringing country music groups (as opposed to solo vocalists) into the mainstream, paving the way for the success of today's top country groups. Since its foundation in 1972, Alabama has been composed of Randy Owen (lead vocals), Jeff Cook (guitar, fiddle, background vocals), Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, background vocals) and Mark Herndon (drums).

    Alabama Capitol
    Montgomery, AL www.archives.state.al.us/capital/capitals.html
In selecting Montgomery the legislature expressly provided that the state should be put to no expense in securing lands or in erecting a capitol building. Thus, the citizens of the town immediately organized to secure the "Goat Hill" site and begin erecting a building. Bonds for $75,000 were issued by the municipality which were taken up by local real estate dealers and investors. The Greek Revival plan of the new capitol was drawn up by Stephen D. Button; the contractors were B.F. Robinson and R.W.R. Bardwell. The completed building was presented to the state on December 6, 1847, at the beginning of the legislature's first-ever biennial session.

Alabama - History
At the start of the 19th century, Indians still held most of present-day Alabama. War broke out in 1813 between American settlers and a Creek faction known as the Red Sticks, who were determined to resist white encroachment. After General Andrew Jackson and his Tennessee militia crushed the Red Sticks in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in central Alabama, he forced the Creek to sign a treaty ceding some 40,000 sq mi (103,600 sq km) of land to the US, thereby opening about three-fourths of the present state to white settlement. By 1839, nearly all Alabama Indians had been removed to Indian Territory. During Reconstruction, Alabama was under military rule until it was readmitted to the Union in 1868. For the next six years, Republicans held most top political positions in the state. With the help of the Ku Klux Klan, Democrats regained political control of the state in November 1874. Another major Alabama enterprise was cotton milling. By 1900, 9,000 men, women, and children were employed in Alabama mills; most of these white workers were farm folk who had lost their land after the Civil War because of mounting debts and low cotton prices. Wages in mills were so low that entire families had to work hours as long as those they had endured as farmers.

General Alabama State History
Prior to the first Europeans in the lands of Alabama, the Native American people populating the area were the Alabama (Alibamu), Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Koasati, and Mobile tribes. Spanish explorers are believed to have arrived at Mobile Bay in 1519, and the territory was visited in 1540 by the explorer Hernando de Soto.
The English claimed the area north of the Gulf of Mexico and the lands of what is now Alabama was part of the Province of Carolina, which was granted by King Charles II of England to his favored people in 1663-1665. By 1687, English traders from Carolina were frequenting the Alabama river valley.
In 1702 a French settlement was founded on the Mobile River, including the seat of government of Louisiana, Fort Louis de la Mobile. In 1711, floods forced the abandonment of Fort Louis, in favor of the first permanent European settlement, Fort Conde, the present city of Mobile built on higher ground.
With the ending of the French and Indian War in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris, the French occupation of Alabama ended. Great Britain obtained control of the area between the Chattahoochee and the Mississippi Rivers. But had to cede almost all the Alabama region to the U.S. after the American Revolution.
