ALASKA HOME BIOLOGY FILMS GEOGRAPHY ... SPORT Alaska is a U.S . state, located on the northwest tier of North America. It is by far the largest state in area, but one of the least populated. It is the 49th state, having been admitted to the Union on January 3, 1959. The name "Alaska" is most likely derived from the Aleut Alyeska , meaning "great country", "mainland" or "great land". Alaska is one of the two U.S. states not bordered by another state, Hawaii being the other. It is the only non-contiguous state in North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of Canadian territory separate Alaska from Washington. Alaska is thus an exclave of the United States that is part of the continental U.S. but is not part of the contiguous U.S. It is also the only mainland state whose capital city is accessible only via ship or air. No roads connect Juneau to the rest of the state.

  • Alaska, one of the Pacific Coast states of the United States. Like Hawaii, it is geographically separated from the rest of the country. Alaska is by far the largest state (more than twice the size of Texas). Its 656,424 square miles (1,700,139 km2) account for almost one-sixth of the nation's area. The general coastline—more than 6,600 miles (10,600 km)—is longer than the coastlines of all the other states combined. Alaska has few inhabitants, however—fewer than any other state. Alaska is mainly a wilderness of great natural beauty, one largely unchanged by humans. In the north lies a barren arctic plain, like other polar regions a “land of the midnight sun.” Here may best be seen the colorful aurora borealis, or northern lights. Equally impressive are Alaska's majestic mountains, capped by ice and snow and cut by enormous glaciers. Despite its northern latitude and remote location, Alaska is a frontier land of increasing opportunity. Its vast resources of forests, minerals, and fish provide the basis for an expanding economy.

Alaska Geography
The St. Elias area
At the root of the Alaska panhandle, on the border with Canada, is a magnificent area consisting of the Wrangell, Chugach, and St. Elias mountain ranges. The area is characterized by massive glaciers and icefields punctuated occasionally by bare and jagged peaks. It is the third largest glaciated region in the world after Antarctica and Greenland. Because of the rugged, inhospitable terrain, this area is one of the most inaccessible on earth. Vast distances limit access to those travelling by dog sled or bush plane. Rugged topography limits travel within the area to mountaineers with technical climbing skills. Scores of unclimbed peaks exist. The area is home to several noted mountain peaks:
Mount Logan (19524')
This is the highest peak in Canada and the second highest in North America after Denali. In terms of volume, Mount Logan is the most massive mountain in the world. Its summit crowns a ridge which exceeds 17000 feet in altitude for some 13 miles. Because of its isolated inland location, it takes would-be climbers a few weeks just to approach.
Mount Saint Elias (18008')
Located on the border of Alaska and the Yukon Terretory, Mount Saint Elias is the second highest peak in the U.S. and in Canada. It has a remarkable pyramidal shape and is very difficult to climb because it is so steep. Despite that fact, the first successful climb of it was quite early, in 1897, some 28 years before than Mount Logan, because of its proximity to the ocean. Its distance from the present-day tip of Icy Bay is a mere 17 miles, which is barely a stone's throw in comparison to the rest of the region.

Alaska was purchased
by the United States from Russia in 1867 for seven million dollars and became the 49th American state on January 3, 1959. During the Gold Rush in the 1880s and 1890s, exploration of the territory increased, but the wild regions of Alaska are still largely undiscovered due to powerful natural forces. Millions of lakes, thousands of glaciers , nearly two thousand islands, and the highest mountain in America, Mt McKinley , help make up Alaska's rugged landscape. In the summer, the days are long, but Alaska's winter is cold and dark. Inuit people in the Arctic north have resided in Alaska for centuries, but new settlers and adventurous tourists are lured to Alaska by bears, whales, salmon, and a vast wilderness. Alaska's major cities include Anchorage Fairbanks , College, and Juneau . The state's economy focuses around gold, silver, copper, tin, mercury, oil, tourism, and delicious wild Alaskan salmon.

HOME Alaska / Geography From Wikipedia Alaska has a longer coastline than all the other U.S. states combined. It is the only non-contiguous U.S. state on continental North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of British Columbia (Canada) separate Alaska from Washington state. Alaska is thus an exclave of the United States. It is technically part of the continental U.S., but is often not included in colloquial use; Alaska is not part of the contiguous U.S., often called "the Lower 48." The capital city, Juneau, is situated on the mainland of the North American continent, but is not connected by road to the rest of the North American highway system. The state is bordered by the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada, to the east, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska's territorial waters touch Russia's territorial waters in the Bering Strait, as the Russian and Alaskan islands are only 3 miles (4.8 km) apart. As it extends into the eastern hemisphere, it is technically both the westernmost and easternmost state in the United States, as well as also being the northernmost. Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 586,412 square miles (1,518,800 km2), much larger than Texas, the next largest state. Alaska is larger than all but 18 sovereign countries.
