The Alaska Board of Education and Early Development has approved a new tiered certification system for Alaska teachers. Effective September 2005, all teachers new to the Alaska teaching system will be placed in Tier I, Initial Certification. Initial Certification requires the following:
Initial Certification is valid for three years and is not renewable. To remain certified to teach in Alaska beyond three years, teachers placed in Tier I must meet the requirements for Tier II, Professional Certification. Professional Certification requires the following:
Professional Certification is valid for five years and is renewable with six credits, three of which may be determined by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED).
Tier III, Master Certification requires the following:

Certificated Teacher Application Process
The district continuously accepts applications for all teaching positions. Applicant must hold or be eligible for an Alaska teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement. A completed Southwest Region School District application for professional employment, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and Alaska teacher certification are combined to create a complete teacher application. EDSE F610 Assessment of Students with Disabilities

EDSE F612 Curriculum and Strategies I: Low Incidence

EDSEF642 AutismandAspergerSyndrome: Social and Behavioral Issues

These courses will provide training in the multifaceted nature of working with special needs children and their families: cultural, bio- logical, legal, medical and emotional. Students will become familiar with the content standards of the Council for Exceptional Children and the resources available for understanding the regulations in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Reciprocity: Interstate Certification Compact
Effective March 1, 1996, Rhode Island adopted "Enhance Reciprocity" as a route to certification. This route provides that certification be granted to an applicant who holds a valid and comparable certificate from another member state, provided the applicant has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness.
A copy, including any translation key, of a valid teaching support administrative , or vocational certificate from the member state is required. NOTE: This certificate must be a Level II certificate as defined in the Interstate Contract. NOTE: This certificate must be valid during the period for which reciprocity is sought and must also be valid in the teaching area for which certification is desired.

Most teachers without previous experience will need to take an Alaska-approved teacher education program. National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) . If you lack this type of certification, but have previous teaching experience, you can still become an Alaskan teacher without additional education through the " Highly Qualified " program, which verifies that your education and experience are commensurate with Alaska’s teaching standards. Teachers educated overseas may be granted Alaskan certification through evaluation of their foreign program. Alaska has more than each district individually for employment. Alternatively, you can visit Alaska Teacher Placement Professional Teacher Certification National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) or score at an advanced level for your two performance reviews.
