Albanian government endorses discrimination of non-Muslims
  • November 19th, 2009 11:27 am ET
Job vacancies, but one must be Muslim to apply As Albanians debate whether they should remain a member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), which Albania joined in 1992, the government of Albania continue to endorse the discriminatory job policy of the OIC. The OIC website posts job vacancies continuously within its headquarters in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, www.oic-oci.org. Currently, the OIC is looking to hire Political Officers, and the general requirements, iter alia, state that a candidate for this job must be “ A Muslim national of one of the OIC Member States, and not to hold a dual nationality with a non-Member state. If married, the spouse must be Muslim.” An Albanian satisfies the first part of this requirement. However, most Albanians would not qualify for this job because of the religious requirement part.
According to a non-scientific surveys conducted in Albania, 65% of Albanians identify themselves as atheists, Catholics, Orthodox, Protestant, or of a mixed religion, as their parents may be of different religious background. Only 35% identify themselves as Muslim. According to the OIC’s job requirements, none of these Albanians, i.e., 65% of the population, would qualify to hold a position within the OIC. Yet, Albania continues to remain a member of the OIC knowing fully well of this discriminatory policy against non-Muslims, and even endorses such policies.

UN envoy praises Albanian government's stance on Kosovo status talks
Excerpt from report by Ylber Drazhi, "UN envoy for Kosovo praises Albanian government's position", published by Albanian newspaper Rilindja Demokratike on 27 November
Martti Ahtisaari, the special envoy of the UN secretary-general on the status of Kosova [Kosovo], has said he is pleased with the stance taken by the Albanian government on the question of the settlement of Kosova's final status. He described the behaviour of the Albanian government as the best possible and said he was pleased to see that Tirana is actively following this process and has expressed its readiness to put itself at the disposal of the international community, which is engaged in resolving this problem.
Ahtisaari said that the involvement of other actors in this question would only complicate the work of his group. "I think that the role the Albanian government is playing is very appropriate and I appreciate it. I think that the Albanian government is dealing with this issue in the best possible manner. It is following the situation actively and is ready to place itself at our disposal; I appreciate this very much. Their involvement would have created an impossible situation, because many sides would have asked to become actors in this process. This would have complicated the situation for us a great deal," declared Ahtisaari. [Passage omitted]
