History in Albania
Edit This Scanderbag The name Albania is derived from an ancient Illyrian tribe the Albanoi, forbears of the modern Albanians. The Albanian name for their country is Shqiperia meaning Land Of The Eagles. The Albanians are the one of the oldest races in Europe and they speak the oldest language. The first people to settle in Albania were the ancient Illyrians, are which today are known as Albanians. Ancient Illyria included Albaniana, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Epirus, Serbia and Macedonia. When the Slavic tribes known today as Serbs, Croats and Slovenes migrated down to the Balkans they settled on ancient Illyrian soil. Albania is also a country with a very rich and old history and has one of Europe's biggest holy warrior (Skanderbeg), who fought against the Ottomons in the 1400's. Albanian History The origins of the Albanian people, as was mentioned before, are not definitely known, but data drawn from history and from linguistic, archaeological, and anthropological studies have led to the conclusion that Albanians are the direct descendants of the ancient Illyrians and that the latter were natives of the lands they inhabited. Similarly, the Albanian language derives from the language of the Illyrians, the transition from Illyrian to Albanian apparently occurring between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. Illyrian culture is believed to have evolved from the Stone Age and to have manifested itself in the territory of Albania toward the beginning of the Bronze Age, about 2000 BC. The Illyrians were not a uniform body of people but a conglomeration of many tribes that inhabited the western part of the Balkans, from what is now Slovenia in the northwest to and including the region of Epirus, which extends about halfway down the mainland of modern Greece. In general, Illyrians in the highlands of Albania were more isolated than those in the lowlands, and their culture evolved more slowlya distinction that persisted throughout Albania's history.

Albanian Hotels
These hotels as the title suggests are situated on or close to the beach. Represented in this category are not only those Albanian beach hotels situated by the seaside but also a few that are situated close to lakeshores. This subdivision aims to help travellers who prefer Albanian beach holidays as their main activity while visiting Albania. However most of the beach hotels can be used as a springboard for daytrips to important Albanian sightseeing.

Religion and Music
Religion in Albanian
During Ottoman rule the majority of Albanians have been converted to Islam. According to the 1939 statistics 70% of the population were perceived as Muslim, 20% belonging to the Albanian Orthodox and 10% to the Catholic Church. Religious strife has never posed a serious problem in Albania and interreligious marriages were common, in some places even the rule. Some families had double religious identities, Muslim to the outside world and Christian at home. In addition 20% of total Muslim population were followers of the Bektashi order, a mystic Dervish order that came to Albania through the Ottoman Janissaries. The order resembles Sufi mystic orders but contains elements quite distinct from orthodox Islam. After the Bektashis were banned in Turkey in 1925 the order moved its world centre to Tirana.
From 1967 to the end of communism, religious practices were banned in Albania and the country was proclaimed the world first atheistic state in 1973. The heavy persecution of clergy, destruction of religious symbols and texts has made resurrection of religious institutions a difficult process. The majority of Albanians today perceive themselves as atheist/agnostic.

    History
The territory of present day Albania has been inhabited since the middle Palaeolitic period (100,000 to 40,000 B.C.), but the first significant civilization dates from the Neilitic period (6,000 to 2,000 B.C.). The original people, the Illyrians, are the ancestors of the present day Albanians. Illyrians were skilled in the working of metals, and also engaged in trade and some piracy. These activities soon brought them into contact with the Greeks, who established colonies around 600 B.C. The Illyrian Kingdom came under attack from the Romans in the late 3rd century B.C., with Philip of Macedonia providing military assistance in 214 B.C. Aseries of wars culminated in Roman conquest and control in 167 B.C. Despite Roman rule, the Illyrians retained their own language, customs and traditions. During this Roman period, which lasted until the 4th century A.D., Illyria enjoyed peace and prosperity, with the city Durres becoming a major Roman trading center. From the 5th until the 12th century, control of the region went back and forth between Byzantium (Constantinople) and the Bulgarians. Independent feudal states were established between the 12th and 14th century. After the Turkish victory over the Serbs in 1389, Albania came under Ottoman control. From 1443 to 1468, one of Albania's brightest moments in history was their brief freedom from the Turks, led by their national hero, Gjargj Kastrioti (given the name Skanderbeg). From his fortress in Kruje, Skanderbeg led his fellow Albanians in some twenty five battles against the Turks. This brief period of freedom ended eleven years after Skanderbeg's death, with the Turks regaining control in 1479. For the next 433 years the Ottoman Empire controlled the country.

The Lost Truth Back to HOME
Albanian History Before going in details, let’s start with an overview of the history of ancient Albania… We specify that, when we talk about Illyrians, we are talking about the ancestors of the Albanians. Comparing ancient Albania, namely the great and most developed Illyria, with the small, mutilated, plundered and mortified Albania of today seems odd. Even the last fifty years of cruel communism has made use of all sorts of violence to oppress any human feelings and to cancel the previous civilizations. The democracy is recent in Albania. Starting from the capital, Tirana, its economy is blooming; you can see discotheques, bars, expensive constructions etc. Now, we will consider a period very distant in the past. Ancient Illyria, was the country of Illyrians, which means "free people” in Albanian. It extended in the western Balkans and was made up from many well developed tribes living around the city-states under one single king. Out of many Illyrian kings, we will mention only the last three, who after reaching the summit of the civilization of those times, with the most perfect schools attended by the greatest notables, as it happens for everything in this world, also for Illyria the decline began.
Gentius' alliance with Macedonia was the pretext for Rome to recommence war against Illyria, which was conquered along with the rest of the Balkans in 168 B.C. To assure the domination over the whole country, Rome divided Illyria in three different provinces and although traditions and customs were respected, the wane of country was relentless.
