For example, the edible red alga called nori is actually the haploid gametophyte phase that alternates with a minute, filamentous sporophyte form that lives inside sea shells. The diploid sporophyte fern is the typical, spore-bearing plant that we see in cultivated flower beds and in moist areas throughout North America. The haploid fern gametophyte is a small, seldom-seen, thallus plant about the size of your smallest fingernail. It grows on the moist ground beneath sporophyte fern populations in areas with sufficient rainfall. Even flowering plants have a conspicuous sporophyte generation that alternates with a microscopic gametophyte phase within the ovule. The gametophye phase is reduced to a 7-celled, egg-bearing embryo sac within the ovule, and a germinated pollen grain and sperm-bearing pollen tube.

    Abstract
The primary focus is on three fossil algal assemblages, all of Middle Cambrian age (approximately 540 million years old): the Langston Formation (Spence Member) of Utah; the Wheeler Shale of Utah; and the Stephen Formation (Burgess Member) of British Columbia. The geologic settingan important consideration for paleoenvironmental interpretationis discussed for each of these units; although differing somewhat in detail, each appears to have been deposited in a near-shore, marine environment. Preserved generally as carbonaceous compressions on the shale bedding planes, the fossil algal specimens discussed here represent 10 genera and 22 species. Two new genera and species are here established: Dichotomophylloides burgessensis and Palaeohymenophykos walcottiana. Each of the 10 genera is given separate consideration; the locality and the number of specimens studied are cited, and possible analogues among modern algae are discussed.

    Conceptacle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Conceptacles are specialised cavities of marine and freshwater algae that contain the reproductive organs. They are situated in the receptacles clarification needed and open by a small ostiole Conceptacles are present in Corallinaceae and some other red algae , as well as the brown fucales . In the Fucales there is no haploid phase in the reproductive cycle and therefore no alternation of generations The thallus is a sporophyte The diploid plants produce male ( antheridia ) and female ( oogonia ) gametangia by meiosis . The gametes are released into the sea , after fusion the zygote settles and begins growth. Two taxa, the corallines and Hildenbrandiaceae , bear conceptacles, although the striking difference between their formation indicates that the conceptacles are not homologous. Similar structures also exist: cryptostomata are similar to conceptacles but differ having only hairs and are sterile. Caecostomata , are found only in Fucus distichus , in these the ostiole becomes blocked during development.
