Linear Algebra and Applications Textbook
Welcome again. In order to enable prospective users to preview my text easily and conveniently, in the past I have put a copy of it on the web for your perusal. In the last few years I've received many helpful comments and appreciative notes for having done so. I would like to thank those of you who sent me these notes and comments. You have helped me substantially improve the text. I am now under contract with Springer-Verlag and the book has been published in their Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics series in hardbound and, more recently, soft cover editions. Therefore, I have removed the on-line copy. I will leave the table of contents below for informational purposes, along with errata sheets for the each version of the textbook. A few comments:
If you have any suggestions or comments, drop me a line. I appreciate any feedback.
Resources
A complete solutions manual to all exercises and problems in the text is available to instructors who have adopted the text. Instructors who would like a copy of this manual should contact Mark Spencer via email to Mark.Spencer@springer.com.
For the benefit of instructors and students using my text, I'm moving a number of downloadable files on my website that pertain specifically to the text into their own directories. I also have complete solution keys to the exams and projects that are found in the directories below. I will email these to instructors who are using my text upon request. The text materials come in three flavors: pdf for perusal, lyx and tex for modification and use by instructors.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
A-Orthogonal Vectors
Two vectors u and v are said to be A-orthogonal if ( u, A * v ) = 0. Here A should be a positive definite symmetric matrix , which in turn guarantees that the expression ( u, A * v ) may be regarded as an inner product of the vectors u and v , with the usual properties. This concept is useful in the analysis of the conjugate gradient method Back to TABLE OF CONTENTS.
Adjacency Matrix
An adjacency matrix of an (undirected) graph is a matrix whose order is the number of nodes, and whose entries record which nodes are connected to each other by a link or edge of the graph. If two nodes I and J are connected by an edge, then A i,j =A j,i . All other entries of the matrix are 0. Thus, an adjacency matrix is a zero-one matrix . The usual convention is that a node is not connected to itself, and hence the diagonal of the matrix is zero. The product A =A*A is a matrix which records the number of paths between nodes I and J . If it is possible to reach one node from another, it must be possible in a path of no more than

Posted: Wednesday 17th of Oct 08:56 What exactly are your difficulties with algebra linear equations with fractions and whole numbers ? Can you elaborate a little more. I remember that not long ago I too had to go through a similar period of apprehension. In my instance, my desperate hunt led me to a teacher in my vicinity. But he was so engaged that he simply did not have the time for me. He was the one who actually suggested that these days there is yet another answer at hand. He initiated me to these amazing programs in math. Back to top Registered: 04.04.2005

These are the lecture notes and tutorial problems for the Linear Algebra module in Mathematics for Informatics 3 (MAT-2-mi3/am3i) . They are a revised version of the ones used in the 2004-2005 session, which were themselves revised due to changes in the syllabus from the ones used in the 2003-2004 session. The original lecture notes have benefited from extant notes on linear algebra by John Meldrum and on polynomials by Andrew Ranicki Linear algebra is the study of vector spaces and linear maps. The module is divided into three parts. During the first part, which will take up about half of the semester, we will study real vector spaces and their linear maps. We will discuss subspaces, linear (in)dependence, bases, dimension, linear maps and linear transformations and their relation to matrices, the effect of changing basis, eigenvalues and eigenvectors and diagonalisation. The second part will be devoted to univariate polynomials. The third and final part will serve as an introduction to algebraic coding theory, concentrating for definiteness on binary linear codes.

That is, as a subject whose goal is to rigorously prove theorems starting from clear consistent definitions. This book attempts to build students up from a background where mathematics is simply a tool that provides useful calculations to the point where the students have a grasp of the clear and precise nature of mathematics. A more detailed discussion of the prerequisites and goal of this book is given in the introduction.

    Introduction
Linear algebra, sometimes disguised as matrix theory, considers sets and functions which preserve linear structure. In practice this includes a very wide portion of mathematics! Thus linear algebra includes axiomatic treatments, computational matters, algebraic structures, and even parts of geometry; moreover, it provides tools used for analyzing differential equations, statistical processes, and even physical phenomena.
    History
See for example the Vector space and Matrix theory pages from the St. Andrews History files. Here is a paper on Hermann Grassmann and the Creation of Linear Algebra . Further reading:

    Applications and related fields
In the accompanying diagram the reader might observe a few clusters of related fields, showing both the many parts of linear algebra and the related fields in which many of these themes are extended and applied.
