Related articles The government of Algeria has a lot of questions to answer about the barbaric slaughter of its citizens by Islamic insurgents. Foremost among them is: Why have government troops not been able to stop the slaughter of 75,000 people, mostly civilians? Where was the army when 400 people were summarily butchered Dec. 30 in Relizane, for example? But Algeria's president and its military rulers aren't taking questions. They refuse to acknowledge or even comment upon the ongoing gruesome massacres except to say they will not accept any outside aid or independent investigation of the bloodbath. Algerian Government Expects Djezzy Purchase by Year-End
The Algerian government has agreed in principle to buy Orascom Telecom's local subsidiary, Djezzy. Algeria's minister of Post, Information and Communication Technologies, Moussa Benhamadi told state radio that the decision to buy the company has been made and the government expects to complete the acquisition of Djezzy's assets before the end of the current year, the Asharq Al Awsat newspaper reported. The report confirms a statement by Algeria's finance minister that the financial evaluation of Djezzy by a local expert is nearing completion, the paper added. The government plans to keep the mobile phone and internet services provider in its current state with regard to its network, workforce and clients because it's a successful company, the daily cites Benhamadi as saying. Orascom Telecom has previously indicated that it puts a valuation of $7.8 billion on the company, although analysts doubt the government would offer more than US$5 billion. The future of the Algerian network has been under discussion for several months, with the Algerian government unwilling to let Orascom sell the company, while also suggesting that it wants to buy the firm itself.

Algerian Government Blocks Djezzy Adverts on State-Owned Television
The dispute between Orascom Telecom and the Algerian government appears to have escalated after the country's state-owned television channels all stopped running adverts for the OTH's local mobile network, Djezzy. Algerian state television, which controls all the country's terrestrial stations, refused to renew an annual advertising contract with Djezzy, an unnamed source with direct knowledge of the situation told Reuters "They (state television) are no longer agreeing to run Djezzy's ads," said the source, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. The timing is interesting as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan is typically one of the strongest selling periods for companies operating in the country. Adverts are continuing to be run on radio and in newspapers, while satellite television networks that operate overseas but are watched in Algeria are also running adverts. Following a long running tax dispute, Orascom recently confirmed that the Algerian government was in talks to buy Djezzy. A clamp down on advertising could push down subscriber growth, and hence the price that the government would have to pay to buy the company.

Algerian government has begun open oppression of Christians
By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service ALGERIA (ANS) At the end of February, 2006, a new law was adopted in Algeria incriminating numerous acts linked to the exercise of non-Muslim religious worship (i.e. Christian) with punishment including up to 5 years imprisonment and heavy fines. An American living and working in France, who asked not to be named, says the Algerian government is now starting to use this law against the Algerian Evangelical Christians. He writes to ANS: "Three Algerian brothers were just found guilty and sentenced to three years of prison and fined $750. The crime: discrediting the religion and the person of the Prophet, i.e. Islam and Mohamed. This was apparently the first such decision in Algeria according to the new law. Algerian Christians are not surprised but they are alarmed." The American says the outbreak of oppression is clearly targeting the Evangelicals in Algeria in order to stop the growth of this movement.

GE And Algerian Government Inaugurate Africa's Largest Seawater Desalination Plant
March 5, 2008 For many years adequate water supplies in Algiers were nearly unattainable, as residential and industrial demand has significantly outstripped supply. More than 2.5M rural dwellers have resettled in the City of Algiers over the past half-century, inflating the population and severely straining the city's water supplies and infrastructure. As a result, residents faced serious water shortages, and often received water for only a few hours each day or sometimes only once every three days. "We are proud to be a partner in the Hamma Seawater Desalination Plant it is a great example of how private and public partnerships can help solve urgent water needs," said Garwood. "Partnerships like this one, with the Algerian Government and AEC, combined with our global scale, financing capabilities, and broad portfolio of equipment, chemicals and services put GE in a unique position to provide solutions for the world's growing water challenges. Our momentum continues to build and in 2008 we expect to grow GE's large structured projects, like Hamma, by 80 percent. We are excited about our prospects in the coming year and we look forward to delivering affordable, on-time and on-budget water treatment solutions to customers around the globe."

UN report supports Algerian government's efforts to fight violence
Algeria, Politics, 9/17/1998 A report published by the UN has condemned the acts of violence committed by extremists in Algeria and called upon the international community to support the Algerian government in its efforts to combat it.
"Terrorism has been condemned outright by the international community and is illegal under international law. Algeria deserves the support of the international community in its efforts to combat this phenomenon," the report said. However, it cautioned that, "Efforts to combat terrorism must take place within the framework of legality, proportionality, and respect for the fundamental human rights of the Algerian population."
The report, prepared by the UN fact-finding committee following a two-week visit to Algeria, stressed that the government's efforts to fight terrorism should be conducted within the course of honoring legitimacy and respecting the basic human rights of the Algerian people.
The report added that the forces in charge of enforcing the law, security and self-defense should be subjected to higher standards of control so as the Algerian people and the international community as a whole would be confident that law is enforced in Algeria.
