MeSH Allergy is a hypersensitive disorder of the immune system Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens ; these reactions are acquired , predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate ) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE , resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema hives hay fever asthma attacks, food allergies , and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees Mild allergies like hay fever are highly prevalent in the human population and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis , itchiness, and runny nose . Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma . In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions A variety of tests now exist to diagnose allergic conditions; these include testing the skin for responses to known allergens or analyzing the blood for the presence and levels of allergen-specific IgE. Treatments for allergies include allergen avoidance, use of

Allergies are relatively common. Both genetics and environmental factors play a role. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances called allergens , which are generally harmless and in most people do not cause a problem. But in a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamines. which fight off the allergen. This causes itching swelling , mucus production, muscle spasms hives rashes , and other symptoms, which vary from person to person.

Allergies: Things You Can Do to Control Your Symptoms
    What causes allergies?
You have an allergy when your body overreacts to things that don't cause problems for most people. These things are called allergens. Your body's overreaction to the allergens is what causes symptoms (see the box below for a list of symptoms). For example, sometimes the term "hay fever" is used to describe your body's allergic reaction to seasonal allergens in the air, such as grass or pollen. Keeping a record of your allergy symptoms over a period of time can help you and your doctor identify which allergens cause you to overreact.
Your doctor may want to do an allergy skin test to help determine exactly what is causing your allergy. An allergy skin test puts tiny amounts of allergens onto your skin to see which ones you react to. Once you know which allergens you are allergic to, you and your doctor can decide the best treatment. Your doctor may also decide to do a blood test, such as the radioallergosorbent test (called RAST).

What Home Products Help Fight Allergies?
Comments Off The fight against allergies is an on-going one! Since there is no real cure for allergies, the only way we can continue to live our normal lives is by preventing them to an extent. That is a task easier said than done, but with billions of people across the world suffering from some or the other allergy, there really is nothing else that we can do! Most of the allergies we are faced with begin in our homes. We live in environments that are utterly polluted, and we expect to get reprieve once we reach home. And if our homes are not free of allergens, where we do we relax?
The good thing is that there are several easy-to-use home products which can make our homes significantly free of allergens. Here are a few of the top tips – • Air purifiers – Especially for people who suffer from air-borne allergens – including those which cause breathing difficulties, there are special air purifiers that can be installed at home to filter out the dust. For people with severe allergies, minor changes may have to be made in their homes to reduce direct ventilation from outside, and all air coming into the home passes through dust filters. There are various air fresheners which have in-built anti-allergen properties, and they’ll also leave the home smelling good! Pet dander is another common allergen, and if you have pets at home, it is necessary that you have an air filter which is capable of filtering out the dander floating around your home.

    Urticaria/Angioedema
My allergy what I shoud know about it Allergy is defined as a "harmful, increased susceptibility to a specific substance," also known as hypersensitivity. Types of Allergic Disease Allergic reactions can result in allergic rhinitis, one of the common manifestations, with usually accompanying respiratory discomfort. Usual cause is inhaling of the allergens in the form of weed, tree and grass pollen, mold spores, house dust, and animal dander. Asthma, is a more serious form of the disease, results in wheezing and shortness of breath due to a narrowing of the bronchial tubes. Asthma is caused by the sensitivity to certain the allergens. Skin allergies include eczema, or atopic dermatitis, which is characterised by itchy rashes and oozing blisters; hives or urticaria involving swelling, redness and itching; and contact dermatitis. When hives are accompanied by swelling (angioedema) of the eyelids, tongue, mouth, hands or feet, difficulty in breathing or swallowing can occur. Allergies to certain foods, most notably, fish, eggs, milk, nuts, and wheat, induce intestinal disturbances and occur frequently in children who often outgrow it after age three.

    http://www.docflash.com/allergies.htm
Allergies Do you drive with your eyes closed? You do while sneezing. Driving with a bad cold or with allergies can be hazardous. Treating allergies is good for your safety, not just your sniffles. Allergies are often worse certain times of the year. Spring is bad, since plants bloom, releasing pollens. If you're allergic, your body reacts to these pollens and to other allergens (things you're allergic to) as if they're invading organisms: it tries to kill them. Mold releases spores when humidity rises, triggering allergies in people with mold allergies when it rains or gets damp. Allergies can be confused with an upper respiratory infection, like a cold. Though symptoms may be similar at first, colds eventually involve more systems than just your nose. They'll usually cause fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Allergies won't. Colds may resemble allergies since the body's defense mechanisms against cold viruses and allergens are similar. Your nose gets stuffy and runny, you sneeze, and sometimes you cough. This is how your body tries to trap and eliminate invaders, which may be bacteria, virus or allergens. Treatments for allergies vary. Most work by convincing your body not to fight so hard, or by blocking some of your bodys defense mechanisms.

Allergy Shots: Could They Help Your Allergies?
    What are allergy shots?
An allergy shot contains a very small amount of the substance that you are allergic to (called an allergen). Common allergens include mold and pollen from grasses, ragweed and trees. So, for example, if you are allergic to grass pollen, a small amount of grass pollen will be put into the shot.
    How do allergy shots work?
Allergy shots help your body fight the allergen. When you get shots that contain the allergen, your body's immune system makes antibodies to the allergen. The next time you have contact with the allergen, these antibodies help block its effect. Because the antibodies block the way your body reacts to the allergen, your allergy symptoms become less severe. After many allergy shots, you might start to get relief from your allergy symptoms. This relief will last for a long time.

Are allergies a problem? Some medical statistics indicate that 1-in-7 Americans experienced the symptoms of an allergy in 1950. By 1970, approximately 1-in-5 reported having allergies. And by 1985, approximately 75 Million Americans, or 1-in-3, suffered from allergies.
    Nutritional Support for Allergies
Click this link for details on how allergies are caused, and how to combat allergies with nutrition. What is an allergy?
An allergy is a catch-all word for a wide variety of reactions to substances that the body determines to be foreign. Anything that it does not recognize as itself can be considered an allergen . When the body encounters a foreign substance, it reacts by making antibodies or releasing certain chemicals called histamines . When histamines and other substances are released into the system, they cause an inflammatory reaction we call an allergy What are the symptoms?
The inflammatory reaction affects the tissue and organs, mainly the skin, mucous membranes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms commonly produced include itching and watery eyes, runny and congested nose and sinuses, sneezing, respiratory symptoms, headache, skin reactions and rapid heart beat. Other symptoms may include fatigue, intestinal gas or pain, abdominal bloating and mood changes.
