How do you get allergies? Scientists think both genes and the environment have something to do with it. Normally, your immune system fights germs. It is your body's defense system. In most allergic reactions, however, it is responding to a false alarm. Allergies can cause a runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes , swelling or asthma . Symptoms vary. Although allergies can make you feel bad, they usually won't kill you. However, a severe reaction called anaphylaxis is life-threatening. ALLERGIES Your child has had a runny nose and cough for several weeks now. You realize that this is her third or fourth cold this winter. In fact, she never really seems to get completely well in between the colds. You are growing weary of the constant nose wiping and doses of cold medicine during the night just so she, and you, can sleep. When will these colds end? Or could it be allergies? How do you tell? Here is some information to walk you through the confusing world of allergies and help you prevent and treat these bothersome symptoms. One quick note before we embark on this extensive discussion. This section deals mainly with NASAL ALLERGIES symptoms that involve the nose, eyes, throat, ears and chest. This section does not discuss food allergies or skin allergies. It also does not deal specifically with asthma, although it does apply to allergy prevention issues for asthma. Eye Allergies
swfobject.registerObject("flash3737", "8.0.0", "/flash/expressInstall.swf"); By Gina White , with updates by Marilyn Haddrill ; reviewed by Vance Thompson, MD Eye allergies often are hereditary, and occur due to processes associated with other types of allergic responses. When an allergic reaction takes place, your eyes may be overreacting to a substance perceived as harmful, even though it may not be. For example, dust that is harmless to most people can cause excessive production of tears and mucus in eyes of overly sensitive, allergic individuals. Allergies can trigger other problems, such as conjunctivitis ( pink eye ) and asthma. Combined nasal and eye allergies create a condition known as rhinoconjunctivitis. About 30 percent to 50 percent of U.S. residents have allergy symptoms. And about 75 percent of those symptoms affect the eyes.*

    Allergies
Allergies are the immune system's specific reaction to a normally harmless substance such as pollens, certain foods, or medicines. There are two main types, seasonal and perennial. The seasonal variety occurs at specific times of the year, while the perennial variety can happen year-round. In many cases, successful treatment involves medication, reducing contact with specific allergens, or shots.

A properly functioning immune system is a well-trained and disciplined biological warfare unit for the body. The immune system is really quite amazing. It is able to identify and destroy many foreign invaders. The immune system can also identify cells that are infected internally with viruses, as well as many cells that are on their way to becoming tumors. It does all of this work so the body remains healthy. As amazing as the immune system is, it sometimes makes mistakes. Allergies are the result of a hypersensitive immune system. The allergic immune system misidentifies an otherwise innocuous substance as harmful, and then attacks the substance with a ferocity far greater than required. The problems this attack can cause range from mildly inconvenient and uncomfortable to the total failure of the organism the immune system is supposed to be protecting. Learn More

    http://www.liferesearchuniversal.com/allergy.html
Allergies Exaggerated immune reactions to common substances that are swallowed, injected, or inhaled, or that touch the skin or the eyes, allergies can make an otherwise healthy person feel miserable. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, choking, runny nose, sneezing, tearing, and itching. The skin, respiratory system, stomach, intestine, and the eyes are typically affected. Allergic reactions occur when the body starts producing antibodies to fend off allergens, the substances that provoke such discomfort and irritation. The most common environmental allergens are grass and tree pollens, mold spores, dust mites, and animal dander. Eating certain foods and food additives and being stung by insects can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people. Such common disorders as eczema, hives, hay fever and asthma are often attributed to allergic reactions. Common Sense Care : Perhaps the best advice is the simplest : avoid the foods, plants, animals, drugs, dust, or other substances that trigger an allergic reaction. If the allergen is airborne, clean living and working spaces frequently . Wear a face mask when doing chores. Get rid of dust, molds and mildew.
