Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
E stablished in 1984 and located on the mainland of eastern North Carolina, Alligator River contains over 152,000 acres. Many species of wildlife call Alligator River home. The refuge bird list suggests at least 200 species of birds spend at least a portion of their year here. Many neotropical migrants, such as prothonotary warblers, prairie warblers, Swainson's warblers, worm-eating warblers and red-eyed vireos nest in the thick pocosin vegetation. Wood ducks, barred owls and other cavity nesters seek the old trees inevitably left due to their inacessible locations. Endangered and threatened species found on the refuge include the American alligator, peregrine falcon, American bald eagle and the red-cockaded woodpecker. the refuge is also home to one of the largest remaining concentrations of black bear along the mid-atlantic coast. L ong ago the area that now comprises Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge was considered by most people to be a vast wasteland. Visitors to the Outer Banks from the west made a special effort to complete their journey before dark, lest they risk a vehicle break-down on "no-man's land". Stories of bears, snakes and other vermin coupled with miles of nothingness on both Highways 64 and 264 made the casual traveler cautious, if not suspicious, of being stranded there.

Yeah, it was a pretty stupid thing to do. It probably was a weight thing, and they are lucky they weren't all hurt or killed. I could never have done it. I am the biggest elevator baby I know. The building I used to work in had a faulty oneI got stuck on it one day. Not for very long, but I swear I have had the worst elevator dreams ever since. The recurring one is with me starting at the top floor, and as soon as the door closes, the elevator ceiling drops down about 2 feet or so, so it's just inches above my head. Then rather than going down, it starts to go diagonally through the building, with the car actually getting smaller and more triangular shaped on the way down. Freaks me out so bad. By the time I get to the bottom, the car is just big enough for about 2 people squatting, and I'm a wreck.

The filthy floodwaters that have engulfed much of New Orleans are posing a fresh challenge for the city - where should the toxic mess be deposited? Fears are growing that the wrong choices now could spark environmental problems for decades to come. The lake is long used to pollution but was getting cleaner Lake Pontchartrain, the large water mass north of New Orleans, is the focus of many of these fears.

RECENT OBSERVATIONS Week Ending October 31, 1999 It's not often that you see a truly newsworthy "herp" story in the local newspaper. However, one did appear at the end of last week. Hickory Tavern is a little crossroads community in Laurens County about 10 miles from my home. It was reported that on the night of October 18 th a deer hunter found a 5-foot Alligator crossing a road in Hickory Tavern. For those who are not familiar with the geography of South Carolina, Laurens County is in the middle of the Piedmont. This is a long way from the natural range of alligators. Wildlife officers were called and they captured the gator. They tentatively identified it as an Alligator, and not a Caiman, but will verify its species before releasing it into its natural habitat. It is speculated that it was someone's illegal pet. It was also reported that an alligator was taken from Lake Greenwood last year. Lake Greenwood is about a mile from my house. My first thought upon reading the story was "With all the cruising I do, why couldn't I have been lucky enough to find it!" I am about 90 percent recovered now. On Tuesday I was able to walk around the farm and do a little herping. I saw an Anole and found a Slimy Salamander under a piece of sheet metal. I walked to one of the springs to check on the Three-Lined Salamanders. This spring is vertically encased with a 30-inch diameter concrete pipe. Last October Three-Lined Salamanders used the spring well as a spawning pool. I saw one salamander in the well. There were a number of the white spermatophores floating and attached to the walls of the casing.

    Alligator Safety Tips
Sanibel contains over 2,200 acres of freshwater wetlands that provide habitat for a sizable population of alligators. Since many of the residential neighborhoods on the Island contain lakes or interface with conservation lands containing wetlands, interaction between humans and alligators is likely. Since alligators are cold-blooded reptiles, their metabolic rate increases and decreases as water and air temperatures fluctuate. During cooler months, alligators are generally lethargic and do not move around much. By the beginning of April, when the weather starts to warm, alligators become active, feeding more, looking for new territories and mating. It is during these times that alligator sightings are most prevalent. If you see an alligator, the best thing to do is leave it alone. The following is a list of safety tips to ensure that your time spent on Sanibel is both rewarding and safe.
    THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Please keep the following tips in mind to ensure the time you spend on Sanibel does not result in a conflict with an alligator:
    • Be aware of the possibility of alligator attacks when in or near fresh or brackish bodies of water. Many attacks occur when people do not pay close enough attention to their surroundings when working or recreating near water.
