No Loathsomeness in Love
by Robert Herrick What I fancy I approve,
No dislike there is in love:
Be my mistress short or tall,
And distorted therewithal:
Be she likewise one of those,
That an acre hath of nose:
Be her forehead and her eyes
Full of incongruities:
Be her cheeks so shallow too,
As to show her tongue wag through:
Be her lips ill hung, or set, And her grinders black as jet; Has she thin hair, hath she none, She's to me a paragon. "No Loathsomeness in Love" by Robert Herrick. Public domain. ( buy now It's the birthday of Condoleezza Rice books by this author ) born in Birmingham, Alabama, on this day in 1954. Her parents were educators and she grew up taking lessons in French, ballet, and ice skating during her childhood in segregated Birmingham. She was friends with one of the girls who died in the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, which happened not far from her own house. Her parents enrolled her in first grade at the age of three, but she managed to foil their plans by ditching class several days in a row. She planned to become a concert pianist and went off to the University of Denver to study piano, but switched her major to political science and became obsessed with the Soviet Union. She wrote a thesis on military policy in the former Czech Republic, earned a Ph.D. at the age of 26, and switched from being a Democrat to a Republican. She taught at Stanford, worked for Gerald Ford and the first George Bush, and returned to Stanford, where she was appointed provost, the first woman and youngest person to have that job in the school's history. In 2001, she became national security advisor and in 2005 she became secretary of state.

STATISTICAL DATA
1724 20TH ST NW During the May 1970 antiwar demonstrations in Washington, the DC Switchboard kept its offices open 24 hours a day and ran a first aid station for the protesters. And again, for the 1971 May Day attempt to shut down the city, DC Switchboard ran an in-house first aid station. Down in the basement was a Free Store run by DC Switchboard where you could take what you needed so long as you left something in return. Michael Heller and his wife owned 1724. "He was a wonderful landlord, easy to work with, always willing to negotiate and be patient when the rent was late, and honest as the day was long," remembers Deacon Maccubin. Low rents and tolerance attracted many of the tenants. . . A 1971 notice in the Quicksilver Times encouraged Earthworks customers to say "high" as they came in and get a free packet of rolling papers. . . Earthworks was DC's first openly gay non-bar business. Its corner shelves of gay and lesbian books and magazines were the city's first selection of gay literature and nonfiction.

November 2010 Issue
Posted October 25th, 2010 by Maine Sportsman The teaser headline on the cover of this month’s issue sums it up nicely. It is all about the deer and this issued is filled with information about where, when and how to shoot the buck of your dreams. Of course, like every issue of The Maine Sportsman, there’s so much else to read too. For instance, we’ve got a two page spread on the Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area written by Lisa Kane of the Fish and Wildlife Department. This month’s Wildlife Quiz is on the bobcat, so you’ll want to check out your knowledge about that shy and retiring critter. But don’t think we’ve neglected you fishermen. Ken Allen has yet another highly effective fly pattern for you in his Fly Box column and Tom Seymour’s column on Trout Fishing is something you ought to be reading every month. As a bonus this month, there is a wonderful story written by Lynn Ross that tells what important lessons she learned about guns when she was just nine years old. Lynn is an extremely talented writer with a superb ability to write humor. She always makes me laugh out loud. Naturally, all our usually great features are included, everything from a fact-filled Almanac section to the always fascinating Quotable Sportsman.

Cy Young Award
The Cy Young Award was Commissioner Ford Frick's idea to honor the best pitcher in Major League Baseball. Hard lessons were learned by the Chalmers Award earlier in history so the recipients of the Cy Young Award were selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America from the beginning. Note: During the first eleven years (1956 - 1966), only one winner from Major League Baseball was selected. Immediately after Commissioner Frick retired, the rules were changed to honor the best pitcher from each league. "I didn't cheat when I won the twenty-five games in 1961. I don't want anybody to get any ideas and take my Cy Young Award away. And, I didn't cheat in 1963 when I won twenty-four games. Well, maybe just a little." - Whitey Ford in Slick (1987) Cy Young Award
