Alternative fuels are derived from resources other than petroleum. Some are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. Often, they produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel. To promote alternative fuels, the Federal government offers tax incentives to consumers purchasing qualifying alternative fuel vehicles.
  • Ethanol is produced domestically from corn and other crops and produces less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels. Biodiesel is derived from vegetable oils and animal fats. It usually produces less air pollutants than petroleum-based diesel. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that generates less air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Propane , also called liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is a domestically abundant fossil fuel that generates less harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Hydrogen can be produced domestically from fossil fuels (such as coal), nuclear power, or renewable resources, such as hydropower. Fuel cell vehicles powered by pure hydrogen emit no harmful air pollutants.

Alternative Fueled Vehicles
AFVs are vehicles that operate on alternative fuels, such as methanol, ethanol, compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, or electricity, as designated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Some AFVs that can run on conventional fuels like gasoline as well as alternative fuels, are called dual-fueled vehicles. The labels on new and used AFVs also advise consumers to consider the following items before buying or leasing an AFV:
  • Fuel Type and Availability. What kind of fuel powers the vehicle? Find out whether refueling or recharging facilities are available in your area for the fuel the vehicle uses. Operating Costs. Fuel and maintenance costs for AFVs can vary considerably and may differ from gasoline or diesel-fueled vehicles. Visit www.fueleconomy.gov

www.arb.ca.gov Editor's Note: Alternative Fueled Vehicles Available For Test Drives at Rose Bowl As many as seven light-duty passenger vehicles powered by methanol, compressed natural gas and electricity will be on parking lot F of the Rose Bowl for test drives and photograph opportunities by automotive and environmental writers on Friday, June 14 between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The test drives are being offered as part of the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Test Clinic sponsored by the University of California, Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. The clinic is being conducted to better acquaint as many as 300 Southern California residents with the driving and refueling characteristics of alternative fuel powered vehicles. Those vehicles are likely to be available in the near future, as a result of Air Resources Board (ARB) low emission rules. Also available will be ARB and institute experts on alternative fuel vehicles and transportation to answer questions about the vehicles and their likely effect on the driving habits of Southern Californians. To reach the Rose Bowl, take the Seco Drive exit from Interstate 210 and proceed west into Brookside Park until it intersects Arroyo Blvd., proceed north on Arroyo until you reach the Rose Bowl. For more directions, refer to Thomas Guide, 1991 edition, page 26, section E2 or call Dan Sperling at (818) 304-9184.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES The demand for transportation fuels in California is increasing. The number of light-duty vehicles is projected to grow from 25.6 million on-road vehicles in 2003 to 35.6 million by 2025. Unless we change our habits, petroleum will be the primary source of California's transportation fuels for the foreseeable future, and as demand continues to rise and in-state and Alaskan petroleum supplies diminish, California will rely more and more on foreign imports of crude oil. Nearly 100 percent of the state's transportation system is currently fueled by fossil fuels. Moving toward a more diversified range of fuels and supporting the advancement of higher efficiency vehicles are two of the goals of the state's programs. As the fifth-largest economy in the world, California is a "nation-state" that runs on energy. Every day, we spend $22 million for natural gas, $82 million on electricity, and $82 million for gasoline and diesel. The State of California has supported the development of alternative transportation fuels (fuels other than gasoline or diesel) since the creation of the California Energy Commission in 1975. Earlier programs included demonstration programs with vehicles using ethanol and methanol, infrastructure development for methanol/gasoline blends, support for flexible fuel, natural gas, and electric vehicles.

Alternative Fuels Discussion
Posted by Mark 2 Comments Alternative fuels are discussed on several pages of this blog. I thought it was time to fire up a discussion about why alternative fuel is necessary and more information about some of the popular types. A concern of fossil fuel inventories reaching record lows and increased emissions standards for automobiles has led to an explosion in alternative fuel research. There are many factors to be considered when determining a viable source of alternative fuel. These will include engine emissions, cost, fuel availability, safety, engine life and being able to build an infrastructure to deliver this combustible fuel.
Alternative fueled vehicles
Many vehicles on the road are designed to use something other than gasoline as fuel. These are commonly referred to as dedicated vehicles or multiple fuel vehicles. Dedicated vehicles are those designed to use one particular type of alternative fuel such as diesel. Multiple fuel vehicles are designed to use more than one fuel. Some of these bi fuel vehicles will have separate fuel tanks and can operate on one or the other.

Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions and get all the facts before making your final decision.
As always, caveat emptor - buyer beware!

Driving a car fueled by something other than gasoline or diesel fuel is no longer the stuff of science fiction. In addition to conventional gasoline and diesel fuel, reformulated - cleaner - gasoline and alternative fuels now are sold in many parts of the country. Alternative fuels such as methanol, ethanol, compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and electricity produce fewer tail pipe pollutants than conventional gasoline and diesel fuel. Using them could improve our air quality.
In 1992, Congress passed the Energy Policy Act to promote the use of alternative fuels. For example, the law requires owners of fleet vehicles to purchase a certain number of alternative fueled vehicles. Congress also directed the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to issue labeling requirements for alternative fuels and alternative fueled vehicles. Two FTC Rules - the Alternative Fuels and Vehicles (AFV) Rule and the Fuel Rating Rule - require fuel dispensers and alternative fueled vehicles to be labeled with information to help consumers make knowledgeable decisions when it comes to filling up or buying a vehicle. The AFV Rule applies to new and used alternative fueled vehicles that are sold to consumers or leased to consumers for a minimum of 120 days.
