Welcome to Pearson Fuels
Pearson Fuels opened in 2003 as the nation's first Alternative Fuel Station. From day one the station offered an amazing number of firsts in what most people thought was the mature retail fueling industry. Specializing in bringing alternative fuels to the public, Pearson brought the first Ethanol station to the state of California, the first Biodiesel station to San Diego and the County's first dual pressure Natural Gas Station. Pearson featured San Diego's largest Electric Vehicle charging facility, the county's first Propane Vehicle Fueling Station and was the first independent station in San Diego to offer Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel. Three grades of gasoline rounded the offering to a total of 10 different vehicle fuels. This was the first time a facility like this had ever been built. Pearson has built on this strong history of leadership in the alternative fuel industry to expand a new business model throughout the State of California. Pearson dedicates considerable resources tracking and pursuing funding opportunities for alternative fueling infrastructure. When funding is secured, Pearson uses this funding to help retail gasoline fuel station owners get into the alternative fueling business. The results of these efforts can be seen on the left of this screen.

Summary
To reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and improve air quality, federal agencies have pioneered the use of vehicles fueled by ethanol, natural gas, methanol, propane, and electricity. Federal agencies now manage a fleet of about 7,800 cars, trucks, and vans that use alternative fuels. Wider public acceptance of these vehicles, however, has been stymied by a shortage of convenient refueling stations; high costs; and uncertainties surrounding the economic, environmental, and other benefits of alternative fuels. This report (1) identifies uncertainties about the benefits and costs of using alternative fuels; (2) assesses federal efforts to encourage the development of refueling facilities for such fuels; (3) reviews federal efforts to accelerate acquisitions of alternative-fueled vehicles; and (4) evaluates efforts to coordinate federal, state, and local alternative fuels programs.

My Own Alternative-Fueled Vehicles
This is Penelope II , my 1993 Dodge B250 Ram Wagon (3/4 ton 8-passenger van), with a 5.2 liter (318 cubic inch) V-8 engine that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). Unlike, say, a GM or Honda EV Plus electric car, which were designed for alternative power from the ground up, you can hardly tell that this isn't a perfectly ordinary gasoline-burning vehicle. The only clues (besides the blue "CNG" diamond label on the rear and the license plate and frame, plus a few decals I've added since the photo was taken) are those odd white cylinders hanging off the underside of the body at the rear and along the left side. These are the fuel tanks; there are two behind the rear axle, replacing the standard gasoline tank... ...and two more mounted along the length of the vehicle, to the left of the driveshaft. The three white tanks are what the vehicle came with, stock; they store an amount of natural gas that is about equivalent to 9 or 10 gallons of gasoline. The big greenish tank, the one nearest the driveshaft, was added by Alternate Fuel Technologies in Huntington Beach, California, after I got the van (it was put where the catalytic converter and muffler usually are, so the exhaust system had to be shifted to the right side of the driveshaft). All together, the four tanks store natural gas equivalent to about 16 or 17 gallons of gasolinethis is in a vehicle that comes stock with a 22-gallon gasoline tank and optionally with a 35-gallon tank, so I definitely see a reduction in range between fill-ups compared to an ordinary van! However, this is not enough to prevent me from taking interstate trips; I've driven from Los Angeles, California to Phoenix, Arizona and back several times since 1997, with no problems, and I drove

President Obama Announces $2.4 Billion in Grants to Accelerate the Manufacturing and Deployment of the Next Generation of U.S. Batteries and Electric Vehicles
Recovery Act will fund 48 new advanced battery and electric drive components manufacturing and electric drive vehicle deployment projects in over 20 states
Elkhart, Indiana - Further accelerating the manufacturing and deployment of electric vehicles, batteries, and components here in America, and creating tens of thousands of new jobs, President Obama today announced 48 new advanced battery and electric drive projects that will receive $2.4 billion in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These projects, selected through a highly competitive process by the Department of Energy, will accelerate the development of U.S. manufacturing capacity for batteries and electric drive components as well as the deployment of electric drive vehicles, helping to establish American leadership in creating the next generation of advanced vehicles. "If we want to reduce our dependence on oil, put Americans back to work and reassert our manufacturing sector as one of the greatest in the world, we must produce the advanced, efficient vehicles of the future," said President Obama.
