    Discover the Joy of Learning!
Clonlara School's accredited homeschool program and campus school ignite the desire for learning that lasts a lifetime! Clonlara's Home Based Education Program provides homeschooling families and their students in grades K-12 with a unique combination of curriculum guidance and homeschooling support that fosters life-long love of learning. Each family works closely with an educational advisor who gets to know your child's unique learning style, interests and educational goals in order to help customize a homeschool curriculum that meets your child's needs. Which is why our program centers around flexibilty in how your child learns. We believe learning happens in many different ways. It can be through activities such as hands-on experiences, self-directed learning, writing, reading, family travel, field trips, distance learning programs and online courses. Clonlara also operates a private Campus School in Ann Arbor, Michigan that students attend daily. Clonlara's campus school is a learning community that integrates each student's curiosity, strengths, interests and talents into a comprehensive learning plan. Learning sessions are designed around the students who attend Clonlara. There is

  • The quality of an alternative school consists of two main components:
    • the program (i.e., the school climate, curriculum, including the school location, the activities, etc.), and b) the staff (i.e., the teachers, the administrative staff etc). Thus three main categories of problems can occur
Sometimes there are good curricula, but poor implementation; other times there are great teachers in poor working environments. There are some alternative schools with excellent staff and a well-designed curriculum; and in the alternative systems of most concern are poor teachers, with poor curriculum. More so than in mainstream education, there area a wide variety in the quality of alternative schools - e.g., Montessori, Steiner, Charter Schools, Schools for Troubled Youth, Outdoor Education. Some programs are fantastic, many are OK, and some have significant problems. Look for evidence of the degree of match between the stated mission and goals and the actual curriculum/practice - because there is little standardization across alternative schools, be aware that actual program content varies considerably.

What is an "Alternative School"? by Dore Frances, IEC, founder of Horizon Family Solutions, LLC What is an "Alternative School"? An alternative school is an educational setting designed to accommodate behavioral, educational, and/or medical needs of adolescents that may not be adequately addressed in a traditional public or private school environment. Alternative schools have been established since about the late 1970s to meet the needs of children and adolescents who cannot learn effectively in a traditional school environment (i.e., conventional public or private schools) due to behavioral issues, certain medical conditions, learning challenges, and or psychological issues. Alternative school structure and curriculum varies depending on the educational goals and desired student population. Alternative schools may not be accessible or available locally and may require additional daily travel or residential boarding by the student. Usually, local alternatives to public schools do not require a monthly tuition, while private schools do require parents to pay a monthly tuition for student attendance. A number of different types of alternative schools exist, including the following:

Alternative schools vs. traditional public schools
For some children, traditional public school just doesn't cut it. From behavioral problems to learning disabilities , to simply wanting a better education, certain issues keep some students from thriving in a traditional school environment. Luckily, there are a number of alternatives to conventional public school.
Alternative schools
Here's a look at some of the more common schooling alternatives:
  • Boarding school – This is a tuition-charging school where students not only study but also live on campus grounds. It generally encourages a stronger focus on education . Some boarding schools feature additional training, as well; for example, military boarding schools combine an educational curriculum with military discipline and exercises. Military school – This is an educational institution that also prepares students for service in the military. It focuses on discipline and obedience, and many offer programs for troubled teens.
