White House Biography Grover Cleveland Grover Cleveland was the twenty-second President as well as the twenty-fourth. His first term was from 1885-1889. He was born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. His father was a Presbyterian minister. His formal schooling ended at age fourteen when he went to work to help support the family. Cleveland’s father died when he was sixteen. At eighteen, he moved to Buffalo, where he began to study law. In 1859, Cleveland was admitted to the bar and was promoted to Chief Clerk at the law firm. Cleveland got interested in Democratic politics but lost his first election in 1865. He re-entered private law practice and in1870, he ran for sheriff and won. He proved to be a very honest official. When his term ended, he did not run for re-election. In 1881, Cleveland won the mayoral election by campaigning as a reformer against corruption. At the state convention in 1882 Cleveland won the nomination for governor and then the general election. Cleveland was an honest and forthright governor. He refused to sign any bill with any hint of corruption. His reputation for honesty grew. Republicans nominated Blaine for President; moderates urged the Democrats to nominate a reformer.

White House Biography Inaugural Addresses: State of the Union Addresses: Franklin Pierce Fourteenth President of the United States Franklin Pierce was born on November 23, 1804 to an influential family in rural New Hampshire. Franklin was the first person under age fifty to be elected president, and the first president to be born in the 19th century. Franklin's father, Benjamin Pierce, had led local militia to victories during the American Revolutionary War, and as a result, enjoyed a status that gave him influence in local politics. Like other ambitious parents, Benjamin and wife Anna wanted their eight children to have a better education than their own. Franklin attended local schools until age twelve when he was sent to private academies. At fifteen, he entered Bowdoin College in Maine where he made the friendship of a budding young writer named Nathaniel Hawthorne. Pierce honed his public speaking while at Bowdoin, which made him a natural for the legal profession. In 1829, two years after his father Benjamin won election to the governorship, Franklin was elected to the state legislature. Within two years he was chosen Speaker of the House.

White House Biography Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison was the twenty-third President of the United States. He served from 1889-1893. He was born on August 20, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio. He was named for his great-grandfather, who had been a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His father, John, was a farmer and Benjamin was one of nine children. Benjamin was seven years old when his grandfather, William Henry Harrison, was elected President in 1841. Benjamin’s father lived too far from town to make schooling feasible, so he built a one room schoolhouse of his own and hired a teacher each winter to teach his children. When Harrison was fourteen, he was sent away to a college prep school and at sixteen, entered Miami University in Ohio. He studied hard and graduated in 1852 at the age of eighteen. Harrison moved to Cincinnati and began to clerk and study law. In 1853, he married Caroline Scott, whose father was president of a girl’s school in Oxford, Ohio. They would have two children. After completing his law studies, Harrison moved to Indianapolis, Indiana and established a law practice in 1854. Harrison did well and, in 1855, began a partnership with William Wallace. In 1860, he entered politics as a Republican and ran for the office of Reporter to the Supreme Court of Indiana. The speaking and debate skills that he developed in college paid off and he won the election easily.

White House Biography Calvin Coolidge Calvin Coolidge was the 30th President of the United States. He served from 1923-1929. He was born on July 4, 1972 in Plymouth, Vermont. He was the son of a village storekeeper. He attended Amherst College, graduating cum laude in 1895. He then entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. He worked his way through various political positions. He went from councilman in Northampton in 1899, to member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1907/8. He was Mayor of Northampton in 1910-11, a member of the State Senate from 1912-1915. He was elected Lieutenant governor in 1916 then Governor of Massachusetts from 1919-20. He was a Republican and became more and more conservative as the years went by. He was selected to be the Vice-President nominee with Warren Harding in 1920. Harding was elected in 1920. Coolidge married Grace Goodhue who lived down the street from him in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1905. It was reported that the first time she ever saw Coolidge she saw him through a window. He was in his underwear shaving and wearing a hat. She started to laugh and he saw her looking at him. He explained to her that he often wore a hat to keep his hair out of the way why he shaved.

He took office in 2001 and was re-elected and started his second term on January 20, 2005. Prior to becoming the President, Bush was elected as the Governor of Texas for six years. He was born on July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. Bush attended Philips Academy and Yale University. Bush was an F-102 fighter pilot for the Texas National Guard. He then attended Harvard Business School, after which he moved to Midland Texas and became a business career in energy. Bush worked on his fathers Presidential campaign and then gathered a group together and bought the Texas Rangers baseball team. President Bush married Laura Welch who was a teacher and librarian. They have a set of twin girls, Barbara and Jenna. Bush ran as a compassionate conservative in the 2000 election. He maintained the traditional conservative line with regard to core issues, like preferring a small government, tax reductions and a strong military. He opposed gun control as well as abortion. He chose Dick Cheney as his running mate.

Johnson Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th President of the United States. He served from 1963-1969. He was born on August 27, 1908 in Stonewall, Texas. His family was not wealthy and he worked his way through `school, then Southwest Texas State Teachers College. In 1934, Johnson married Claudia “Lady Bird” Taylor. Their courtship was very brief. In fact, Johnson had proposed to Lady Bird on their first date. She was known for her efforts to “beautify” America, especially the American highways. Johnson was elected to the House of Representatives and stood on a New Deal platform. Johnson served in the Navy as lieutenant commander. He won a Silver Star in the South Pacific. He served six terms in the House. He moved to the Senate in 1948. He eventually became the Minority Leader of the Senate. (He was the youngest Minority Leader in Senate history). Johnson then became Majority Leader of the Senate when the Democrate gained control of the Senate. He was a masterful politician, known for his abilities to force deals. Johnson was selected by John Kennedy running mate in 1960. After Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, Johnson was sworn in as President.
