Ancient Greek Philosophy
The Ancient Greek philosophers have played a pivotal role in the shaping of the western philosophical tradition. This article surveys the seminal works and ideas of key figures in the Ancient Greek philosophical tradition from the Presocratics to the Neoplatonists. It highlights their main philosophical concerns and the evolution in their thought from the sixth century BCE to the sixth century CE. The Ancient Greek philosophical tradition broke away from a mythological approach to explaining the world, and it initiated an approach based on reason and evidence. Initially concerned with explaining the entire cosmos, the Presocratic philosophers strived to identify its single underlying principle. Their theories were diverse and none achieved a consensus, yet their legacy was the initiation of the quest to identify underlying principles.

    Concentration in Ancient Philosophy
This concentration is offered jointly by the Departments of Classics and Philosophy. It is designed to produce scholars with a broad range of expertise in both philosophy and classics, with the intention of bridging the gap between the two subjects. It provides the training and specialist knowledge required for undertaking research in ancient philosophy, and at the same time equips students for scholarly work and teaching in either classics or philosophy. Those who complete the concentration will be fully qualified to work as a member of either one of these disciplines, while having developed a broad competence in the other. Students apply for admission to one of the participating departments in accordance with their qualifications and interests. They are treated accordingly as graduate students fully in either the Department of Classics or the Department of Philosophy. The concentration offers graduate students in Classics the opportunity to take classes in philosophy as an integral part of their work. And it offers graduate students in Philosophy the opportunity to develop their knowledge of both classical languages and Graeco-Roman culture. Students from the two departments meet each other regularly in seminars, reading groups and colloquia. Seminar offerings from the two departments are designed to give students the opportunity to study a wide variety of topics including the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy and the philosophy of later antiquity.

by Ryan P. Snuffer Maimonides Why Study Philosophy? Whether a person realizes it or not, his or her thinking has been influenced by philosophers who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. Men such as Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas are still having a profound impact on modern philosophy and theology. One can better understand the present trends in academic circles if the past is better understood. This syllabus is largely a compilation of class notes and class lectures by Norman Geisler. Throughout world history, various philosophical worldviews have dominated at different times. From 600 B.C. to A.D. 400 the religious emphasis was on polytheism (many gods) and henotheism (a super-god like Zeus). From A.D. 500 to 1500, theism was the dominant religious worldview. Agnosticism was dominant between 1500 and 1900. Atheism has been the dominant view since 1900. This is evident in the teachings of Darwinian evolution and secular humanism that have dominated education and other areas of public life. Of course it would be oversimplification to suggest that there were not groups of people within each of these time periods that were exceptions to the dominant view in intellectual circles. This syllabus is not exhaustive. This is really a list of ancient and medieval philosophers of western culture. The section on ancient philosophy looks at more than two dozen philosophers who helped to lay the groundwork for much of western thought that was to follow.

Spooner makes the natural law argument in favor of anarchy.
