    Ancient Philosophy
Lao-Tsu, the founder of Taoism It is difficult to separate out philosophy (the love of wisdom) from religion . It is also hard to separate philosophy from science and mathematics . All of these are parts of people's search to make order out of nature : for the victory of nomos over physis . They are people trying to make sense out of the things that they see happening. One set of ideas that philosophers look at is the problem of how people ought to behave. Is there such a thing as right and wrong? How can you tell what is right and what is wrong? Are right and wrong the same for all people, or do some people have different rules? Who made these rules? Or is happiness more important? We could call this ethics. Some people who have been interested in ethics include: the Babylonians who made the first written laws, the Egyptians who discussed the weighing of souls after death , the Hindus who wrote about reincarnation , the Jews who told the stories of the Garden of Eden and the Covenant with God , the Zoroastrians who divided the world into the Truth and the Lie, and the

      Program in Ancient Philosophy
The Program in Ancient Philosophy is administered jointly by the Departments of Philosophy and Classics, and members of the two departments cooperate in teaching and supervision. The program aims at training productive scholars and effective teachers of ancient philosophy who will also be competent and well-rounded classicists or philosophers. Students apply for admission to, and are accepted by, the Department of Philosophy or Classics, depending on their major interests and previous qualifications. The program is designed differently for students in the two departments, but encourages those enrolled in one department to strengthen their preparation by relevant work in the other. Faculty members offering instruction in ancient philosophy are Tad Brennan (philosophy), Gail Fine (philosophy), Scott MacDonald (philosophy), Charles Brittain (classics) and Terence Irwin, professor emeritus (in residence every other Fall semester.) Inquiries about the program should be sent to Tad Brennan or Gail Fine in Philosophy or Charles Brittain in Classics.

    Ancient Philosophy (80-250)
    Instructor: Robert Cavalier ( rc2z@andrew.cmu.edu
This course will cover Ancient Greek philosophy from the pre-Socratics to the later Hellenistic writers. We will prepare the background for Socrates and Plato by tracing the various historical and intellectual movements that led up to and through the flourishing and downfall of Periclean Athens. A study of Socrates (as represented in Aristophanes' comedy and Plato's early dialogues) will lead to an in-depth reading of Plato's Gorgias Symposium and sections of the Republic . We will approach Aristotle through his 'practical philosophy' as presented in the Nicomachean Ethics . The final sections will discuss the Epicurean, Skeptic, and Stoic movements as well as the work of Cicero. Excerpts from other works of Plato and Aristotle as well as Martha Nussbaum's recent work on Aristotle and Hellenistic philosophy will accompany selected parts of the course.

The Afterlife of the Platonic Soul: Reflections of Platonic Psychology in the Monotheistic Religions More Nature and Science in Hellenistic Poetry More ... More by Gary Alan Scott and William A. Welton (SUNY series in Ancient Greek Philosophy) Wisdom provides a careful reading of one of Plato's most beloved dialogues, the Symposium, which explores the nature and scope of human desire (erôs). Gary Alan Scott and William A. Welton engage all of the dialogue's major themes, devoting special attention to illuminating Plato's conception of philosophy. In the Symposium, Plato situates philosophy in an intermediate (metaxu) position—between need and resource, ignorance and knowledge—showing how the very lack of what one desires can become a guiding form of contact with the objects of human desire. The authors examine the concept of intermediacy in relation both to Platonic metaphysics and to Plato's moral psychology, arguing that philosophy, for Plato, is properly understood as a kind of "being in-between," as the love of wisdom (philosophia) rather than the possession of it.
