Andorra Culture, Map, Flag, Tourist Places
Andorra is one of the oldest nations in Europe, originally established by Charlemagne as a buffer state against the Iberian muslims. As a result of the Paretages of 1278 and 1288, control of the country was split between the Spanish Bishop of Urgell and a nominee appointed by the King of France (initially the Count de Foix) and subsequently by the French emperors and presidents. The country was therefore a co-principality, with two heads of state jointly sharing power – the readiness of both sides to compromise allowed this unique arrangement to last intact until the late 20th century. Although the inhabitants of Andorra were not consulted, they were prepared to accept a deal that guaranteed their security and national integrity. With the exception of a brief period during the Napoleonic Wars, Andorra retained its independence ever since. Andorra is the highest inhabited state in Europe, with the Spanish accounting for 43% of the population, the Andorran 33%, the Portuguese 11%, the French 7% and others 6%. Due to the large number of immigrants and high birth rate, the Andorran population has always been on the rise. Today, 20.46% of inhabitants are under 20 years of age. The official language is Catalan, although most inhabitants also speak French and Spanish due to the many economic and social links to the neighbouring states.

Andorra – Not only the tax haven of the Pyrenees
July 4, 2008 Considering the fact that in Andorra the petrol is about € 1,13/l, a package of cigarettes € 1,50 and the alcohol about 20% cheaper than in the rest of Europe one can surely say that Andorra is some kind of tax haven for addicts. But that is not the only thing. I have seen a lot of people or even friends spending hundreds of Euros there for technologies and clothing. So for those people who want to go shopping in one of the last tax-free regions in Europe: ANDORRA IS A HUGE DUTY FREE SHOP!  But please do not think that this is all! In Andorra it is no problem to rent a car for less money and discover its amazing landscape. The silence of the Mountains and the ripple of waterfalls in the lower regions or the beautiful situated slopes, perfect for all kinds of snow activities, in the higher regions. That is relaxing… Just to inspire you I will give a shortcut about my own trip to and through Andorra.

INTRODUCTION Andorra is a European state located in the heart of the Pyrenees, between France and Spain . For 715 years, from 1278 to 1993, Andorrans lived under a unique co-principality, ruled by the French chief of state and the Spanish bishop of Urgel. In 1993, this feudal system was modified with the titular heads of state being retained, but the government transformed into a parliamentary democracy. Andorra is a tiny yet a charismatic country comprising some of the most dramatic scenery and the best skiing grounds in the world. There are also plenty of good hiking opportunities in the high, remote parts of the country, away from the hustle-bustle of the town crowd and the heavy traffic. Location of Andorra The country of Andorra is tucked away in Southwestern Europe, between France (Ariège, Pyrénées Orientales) and

    History in Andorra
    Edit This Andorra is
    Legend...
Legend tells that Charlemagne founded Andorra in 805 in recognition of aid given by its inhabitants against the Saracens.
    Tradition…
The earliest document known that mentions Andorra is the act of consecration of the cathedral of Santa Maria of Urgell in 839, which mentions the parishes (administrative and territorial divisions) of Andorra as the fief of the Counts of Urgell.
History of counts, bishops and nobles...
Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the Andorran valleys belonged to the counts of Urgell, who ceded them to the See of Urgell in 988 in exchange for other possessions in the Cerdanya, although it was not until the 12th century that Andorrans recognised the sovereignty of the See of Urgell in an agreement signed with the bishop Bernat Sanç in 1176.
A period of struggle for sovereignty over the Andorran valleys began, particularly with the counts of Urgell, which caused the bishops to call on the closest nobles for aid and protection. As a result of their cooperation with the bishop, the House of Caboet received the valleys of Andorra in fief.
Through the marriages of various generations, the house of Caboet became linked with the houses of Castellbò, Foix and Béarn.
