It is a pharmacologically induced and reversible state of amnesia analgesia , loss of responsiveness, loss of skeletal muscle reflexes or decreased stress response, or all simultaneously. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. An alternative definition is a "reversible lack of awareness," including a total lack of awareness (e.g. a general anesthetic) or a lack of awareness of a part of the body such as a spinal anesthetic. The word anesthesia was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

You stay awake but may not remember the procedure afterwards. Regional anesthesia: blocks pain in an area of the body, such an arm or leg. Epidural anesthesia, which is sometimes used during childbirth, is a type of regional anesthesia. General anesthesia: affects your whole body. You go to sleep and feel nothing. You have no memory of the procedure afterwards.

What is Anesthesia?
Anesthesia is a state of unconsciousness induced in an animal. The three components of anesthesia are analgesia (pain relief), amnesia (loss of memory) and immobilization . The drugs used to achieve anesthesia usually have varying effects in each of these areas. Some drugs may be used individually to achieve all three. Others have only analgesic or sedative properties and may be used individually for these purposes or in combination with other drugs to achieve full anesthesia. Curariform skeletal muscle relaxants or neuromuscular blockers ( e.g. succinylcholine, decamethonium curare, gallamine, pancuronium ) are not anesthetics and have no analgesic effects. They may only be used in conjunction with general anesthetics. Normally, artificial respiration must be provided. Physiologic monitoring methods must also be used to assess anesthetic depth, as normal reflex methods will not be reliable. It is important to realize that anesthesia is not a simple thing. It has profound effects on an animal's physiology because of the generalized central nervous system effects as well as specific effects on all other body systems. Thus, while anesthesia is necessary to prevent pain or distress in research animals, it must not be ventured into lightly. It is important to learn about the drugs you will be using and about the physiology of the animal you will be monitoring. Specific

Local or general insensibility to pain with or without the loss of consciousness, induced by an anesthetic. A drug, administered for medical or surgical purposes, that induces partial or total loss of sensation and may be topical, local, regional, or general, depending on the method of administration and area of the body affected.

The term comes from the Greek for "loss of sensation," but that's not the only effect it causes in your body. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Anaesthetic Jump to: navigation search Not to be confused with aesthetics An anesthetic (or anaesthetic , see spelling differences ) is a drug that causes anesthesia —reversible loss of sensation. They contrast with analgesics (painkillers), which relieve pain without eliminating sensation. These drugs are generally administered to facilitate surgery . A wide variety of drugs are used in modern anesthetic practice. Many are rarely used outside of anesthesia, although others are used commonly by all disciplines. Anesthetics are categorized in to two classes: general anesthetics , which cause a reversible loss of consciousness, and local anesthetics , which cause a reversible loss of sensation for a limited region of the body while maintaining consciousness. Combinations of anesthetics are sometimes used for their synergistic and additive therapeutic effects, however, adverse effects may also be increased.

    Anesthesia
Anesthesia is the delivery of medicine to prevent you from feeling pain during surgery and other medical or dental procedures.
    Information
Anesthesia may be given to you by a special doctor called an anesthesiologist or other health care provider. There are three main forms of anesthesia:
    • Local anesthesia Regional anesthesia General anesthesia
Local anesthesia numbs only the part of your body that is hurt or being worked on. You are awake, but won't feel any pain. Most of the time, a needle is used to inject the medicine under the skin. Sometimes it is delivered through a nasal spray or applied to the skin as a gel. You may receive local anesthesia when you get stitches, have a tooth pulled, or when your doctor removes a small piece of skin for a biopsy Regional anesthesia numbs a large area, such as an entire arm, leg, or the entire lower half of your body. An anesthesiologist injects the medicine near a group of nerves so you no longer feel pain. You are awake, but you may be given medicine called a sedative to make you feel sleepy and less anxious. Two common types of regional anesthesia include:
    • Epidural anesthesia Spinal anesthesia
Epidural anesthesia is commonly used to prevent pain during childbirth. The anesthesiologist injects the medicine into the lower back in the area surrounding the spine. This type of anesthesia causes you to lose feeling in the lower half of the body.
