What is surgical anesthesia? Surgical anesthesia is intended to render the patient insensitive to pain. In a typical clinical procedure, known as balanced anesthesia Another method, commonly used in office procedures and outpatient surgery, is known as "conscious sedation". In this procedure, the patient is sedated by barbiturates (e.g., sodium pentothal) or benzodiazepines (e.g., Valium), and receives a local or regional anesthetic (e.g., Novocain). Because no general anesthetic is involved, the patient never loses consciousness. He or she remains awake and able to move during the procedure, and can interact with the medical team, but feels no pain. Because of the amnesic properties of most sedative drugs, the patient may have no memory of the procedure after it is over. Some surgical procedures are appropriately performed with only local or regional anesthesia. Examples include the use of Novocain for routine dental work, or epidural blocks in obstetrics. Without sedation or anesthesia, the patient remains fully aware during the procedure, and retains conscious memory for the events of surgery. In neurosurgery, for example, patients are not commonly anesthetized because the brain has no afferent neurons to conduct pain messages.

The stages of Anesthesia
Question : Dr. Mike,
Can you explain the stages of anesthesia?
Answer : J-
Anesthesia is sometimes divided into stages and some of the stages are further divided into planes.
Stage 1 anesthesia is the period between administration of an anesthetic and loss of consciousness. In people there is reported to be some disorientation prior to the loss of consciousness but in pets this is rarely obvious.
Stage 2 anesthesia is the period after loss of conciousness. In this stage there is sometimes uncontrolled movement, delirium, breath holding, irregular respiration, whining or howling and dilation of the pupils. This stage can be worrisome and most anesthetic protocols seek to keep this period as short as possible without endangering the patient.
Stage 3 anesthesia is the level at which surgery can be performed. The transition from Stage 2 to Stage three is usually denoted by the return of regular respiration, constriction of the pupils and the stopping of involuntary motion or vocalization by the patient. Stage 3 anesthesia is divided into four planes:
In Plane 1 Stage 3 anesthesia the patient still has blink reflexes and swallowing reflexes but has regular respiration with good chest motion. This stage would be considered "light" for surgical anesthesia.

      Anesthesia
      Definition
Anesthesia is the delivery of medicine to prevent you from feeling pain during surgery and other medical or dental procedures.
      Information
Anesthesia may be given to you by a special doctor called an anesthesiologist or other health care provider. There are three main forms of anesthesia:
      • Local anesthesia Regional anesthesia General anesthesia
Local anesthesia numbs only the part of your body that is hurt or being worked on. You are awake, but won't feel any pain. Most of the time, a needle is used to inject the medicine under the skin. Sometimes it is delivered through a nasal spray or applied to the skin as a gel. You may receive local anesthesia when you get stitches, have a tooth pulled, or when your doctor removes a small piece of skin for a biopsy Regional anesthesia numbs a large area, such as an entire arm, leg, or the entire lower half of your body. An anesthesiologist injects the medicine near a group of nerves so you no longer feel pain. You are awake, but you may be given medicine called a sedative to make you feel sleepy and less anxious.

zSB(3,3) If you or someone you know is going to have oral surgery, it is normal to be anxious and question the safety of anesthesia. Naturally, as with any type of anesthesia, there are risks involved. Anesthesia for oral surgery has been proven over and over to be very safe. In fact, dental anesthesia has a much lower death rate than hospital operating room anesthesia and deaths from patients sedated for dentistry are very, very rare. According to Dr. Joel Weaver, professor and director of anesthesiology at Ohio State University's College of Dentistry, one out of 350,000 patients sedated for dentistry die each year. An article in the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology, by rate of comparison, reports a rate of one out of 100,000 deaths from hospital operating room anesthesia. This is 3 and a half times higher than the rate of dentistry.
