    Brain Aneurysm Overview
An aneurysm is an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of a blood vessel. A cerebral aneurysm refers to a blood vessel within your brain that weakens over time and undergoes such widening. This usually occurs at the junctions of the large arteries at the base of your brain, in an area called the Circle of Willis As the blood vessel weakens, it begins to bulge out like a balloon. Often, as an aneurysm develops, it forms a neck with an associated dome, or balloonlike structure. The larger the balloon becomes, the greater the risk it may burst. You would then bleed into your brain.

This website is part of the Whiteley Clinic Network Welcome to the Vascular Surgery Website Feel free to take a look around. This Web Site is primarily set up to educate. Vascular problems are common but are sadly not afforded the high priority they should have. Peripheral vascular surgery is not exactly "sexy" whereas in the eyes of the public heart surgery is. The heart is obviously a very important part of the cardiovascular system but it is only just that; a part. The rest of the vascular tree is equally important and diseases of the pipes that the heart pumps blood into is responsible for a considerable amount of serious and disabling pathology leading to failure of vital organs, amputation of limbs and stroke. I hope that by the time you have had an opportunity to peruse the various pages that you will be enlightened as to what vascular disease is, how blood vessels become blocked or widened, how they malfunction and what can be done about it.

Information about the treatment of brain aneurysms using the less invasive procedure of endovascular coiling for aneurysm treatment.
    http://www.brainaneurysm.com/aneurysm-treatment.html
    Treatment of Brain Aneurysms
Surgery or minimally-invasive endovascular coiling techniques can be used in the treatment of brain aneurysms. It is important to note, however, that not all aneurysms are treated at the time of diagnosis or are amenable to both forms of treatment. Patients need to consult a neurovascular specialist to determine if they are candidates for either treatment.
    Surgical Treatment
To get to the aneurysm, surgeons must first remove a section of the skull, a procedure called a craniotomy. The surgeon then spreads the brain tissue apart and places a tiny metal clip across the neck to stop blood flow into the aneurysm. After clipping the aneurysm, the bone is secured in its original place, and the wound is closed.
    Minimally-Invasive Treatment
    Coil Embolization or Endovascular Coiling
Endovascular therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that accesses the treatment area from within the blood vessel. In the case of aneurysms, this treatment is called coil embolization, or "coiling". In contrast to surgery, endovascular coiling does not require open surgery. Instead, physicians use real-time X-ray technology, called fluoroscopic imaging, to visualize the patient's vascular system and treat the disease from inside the blood vessel.

An aneurysm occurs when part of a blood vessel (artery) or cardiac chamber swells, - either the blood vessel is damaged or there is a weakness in the wall of the blood vessel. As blood pressure builds up it balloons out at its weakest point. The swelling can be quite small or very large - when large it tends to extend along the blood vessel. As the aneurysm grows there is a greater risk of rupture - this can lead to severe hemorrhage, and other complications, including sudden death.
According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary , an aneurysm is a "Circumscribed dilation of an artery or a cardiac chamber, in direct communication with the lumen, usually resulting from an acquired or congenital weakness of the wall of the artery or chamber."
