MTI Home Mpumalanga To Stay To Do ... Contact MTI When? 27 November - 2 January 2010 Contact: Dullstroom Accommodation 013-254 0251 Welcome to Waterval Boven The towns of Waterval-Boven and Waterval-Onder are situated at the foot of the escarpment east of Machadadorp, a two-hour drive from Gauteng. The area around the Elands River Falls was given the names "Waterval Boven" and "Waterval Onder" which means "above the falls" and "below the falls" respectively. The history of the area is closely tied with that of the railway that was built between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay, and the Nederlandsche Zuid Afrikaansche Spoorweg, the Dutch rail company, who established a railway supply depot here in 1895. A section of the rack rail, which was used to pull the locomotive and carriages up the steep gradient, can still be seen at the entrance to the railway tunnel. The towns of Waterval Boven and Waterval Onder are rich with South African (Anglo-Boer) War history and the area was fiercely contested by the British towards the end of the war. Visitors can see a memorial at the station which commemorates the many men who lost their lives while building this section of the railway, while it is still possible to take a walk through the historic ZASM tunnel through which the trains used to pass. At the end of the tunnel is a beautiful waterfall that moves along the Elands River. Krugerhof, now a provincial heritage site in Waterval Onder, is where President Paul Kruger lived for a month before going into exile in Austria in 1900. Both the old railway tunnel and the five-arched bridge have been proclaimed provincial heritage sites.

The Anglo Boer War, fought between the Afrikaaners and English Colonialists in South Africa in 1899 marked, among other things, the first appearance of concentration camps in warfare.
Some History
In 1899, Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. The economic prosperity and industrial supremacy would seem to be enough for the British, but Alfred Milner the High Commissioner of Cape Colony in South Africa,  wanted to further enhance British dominance in Africa. He wanted gold mines in the Dutch Boer republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. He also wanted to create a Cape-to-Cairo confederation of British colonies to dominate the African continent with himself as the proposed ruler
Milner and his generals were characteristically optimistic but they soon learned they were in for a protracted and bloody conflict. Military disasters abounded and  22,000 men were killed in the initial stages. The Anglo-Boer War was a period of sustained violence. For nearly three years the British exercised a scorched-earth policy that left the country in ruins.  The Boer republics knew they stood in Britain's way and citing the strategy that  'the key to a good defense is a good offense' struck first. In 1899 a Boer population of less than 100,000 farmers attacked British cities in South Africa and proceeded to hold at bay a British army of 450,000 for a further two years.  The Empire was internationally humiliated. One historian describes the war as "Britain's Vietnam."

Elephant River Crossing Bourke's Luck Potholes Forest scene near Sabie Forest Falls Formerly the Eastern Transvaal, the province of Mpumalanga lies in the northeast of South Africa. It is bordered by the Limpopo Province to the north and KwaZulu Natal to the south.Mpumalanga in the various dialects of the Nguni people groups is interpreted to mean 'the land of the rising sun'.
It extends east from Gauteng to Mozambique and Swaziland and is the Safari capital of South Africa. The southern half of the world-renowned Kruger National Park is situated on its eastern border with Mozambique.
Kruger is one of Africa's best game parks and the province's biggest attraction.
Kruger occupies most of Mpumalanga's and Northern Province's borders with Mozambique and is more than 20 000 square kilometers in extent - an area the size of Wales or just over the size of Israel. The scenery is exceptional and there is plenty to see and experience for throughout the province.
By agreement between South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, the park now transcends borders into the three neighbouring countries with free roaming for animals on traditional migratory routes and known as the Limpopo Transfrontier national Park. Kruger National Park.
