Identification. ngola Angola may not classify as either a country or a culture. Since 1961, war has destroyed cultural institutions, forced people to flee, and divided the territory between the belligerent. Thus one cannot speak of a single national culture. It is difficult to obtain reliable information because the war precludes research in many areas. Location and Geography. Angola is a country of 482,625 square miles (approximately 1.25 million square kilometers) in western Africa, south of the Equator. There are great variations in climate and geography, including rain forests in the north, drier coastal lands, the fertile central highlands, sandy soils in the east, and desert zones in the Kunene (Cuene) and Kuando Kubango provinces. Apart from large rivers such as the Zaire, Kwanza (Cuanza), Kunene, Kubango (Cubango), Zambezi, and Kuando, there are many smaller rivers, some of which are not perennial. The climate is characterized by a rainy season and a dry season whose timing and intensity differ in the various regions. Angola borders Namibia to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Zambia to the east, and the Republic of Congo to the north. The oil-rich enclave of Cabinda lies north of the Zaire river.

People of Angola The majority of the population is made up of people from African descent. The Ovimbundu, Kimbundu, and Bakongo form the largest ethnic groups while a sizable mixed-race population is also present
in Angola. Roman Catholics are in majority while Protestant forms a small section in the society. The official language is Portuguese but most of them speak a Bantu language. Arts and Crafts In Angola, art plays a very important role and the country's ethno-linguistic groups each have their own distinct artistic style, and various raw materials such as wood, clay, bronze, and malachite that they use to create beautiful works-of-art. These handicrafts have in turn played an important role in furthering commerce by developing a popularity among the tourists. Flag of Angola The flag of Angloa is made up of two equal horizontal bands of red (top) and black with a centered yellow emblem, consisting of a five-pointed star within half a cogwheel crossed by a machete (in the style of a hammer and sickle).

Economy of Angola Decades of war has played havoc with the economy of Angola. The rich agricultural sector of Angola was formerly the mainstay of the economy and even currently provides employment for the majority of the people. But food still needs to be imported in large quantities because of the disruptions caused by the civil war. All areas of production have suffered since fighting began in 1975.

History in Angola
Edit This In NOVEMBER 1975 after nearly five centuries as a Portuguese colony Angola became an independent state. By late 1988 however despite fertile land large deposits of oil and gas and great mineral wealth Angola had achieved neither prosperity nor peace the national economy was stagnating and warfare was ravaging the countryside. True independence also remained unrealized as foreign powers continued to determine Angola's future. But unattained potential and instability were hardships well known to the Angolan people. They had suffered the outrage of slavery and the indignity of forced labor and had experienced years of turmoil going back to the early days of the indigenous kingdoms. The ancestors of most present-day Angolans found their way to the region long before the first Portuguese arrived in the late fifteenth century. The development of indigenous states such as the Kongo Kingdom was well under way before then. The primary objective of the first Portuguese settlers in Angola and the motive behind most of their explorations was the establishment of a slave trade. Although several early Portuguese explorers recognized the economic and strategic advantages of establishing friendly relations with the leaders of the kingdoms in the Angolan interior by the middle of the sixteenth century the slave trade had engendered an enmity between the Portuguese and the Africans that persisted until independence. Most of the Portuguese who settled in Angola through the nineteenth century were exiled criminals called

Angola Culture
The Angola culture is tied to the ancient kingdom of Congo. The largest groups are the Ovimbundu cultural group that speak umbundu. This group mostly live in the central and southern areas the country. This language is closer to the Namibia oshiwambo and rukavango languages. These similarities may stem from the bantu migration times. This could also be do to the proximity of this tribes villages. Both groups are located on both sides of the Namibia-Angola border and can move freely within 60 kilometres between the two countries. The other major cultural groups are the Mbundu who are concentrated in the capital, Luanda and in the central and northern areas and speak Kimbundu. The Bakongo speak variants of the kikongo language and live in the north, spanning the borders with Congo and the Congo Republic. The Lunda, Chokwe and Nganguela cultural groups make up another important part of the tribes, with a minority group of the mesticos (potuguese-africans) who live in cities, especially Luanda. Potuguese is the official language in Angola. Although most Angolans are Roman Catholics, there are some groups who practice traditional religions only. While some combine christianity with their traditional believes and customs. Especially during festivities and celebrations.
