Peace can mean many different things to different people. To some, peace is something you feel inside. To others, peace is freedom from stress. What might it mean to live in a peaceful country? If you live in a mostly peaceful country, you're very lucky. Many people in the world live without peace every day. An unfortunate example is the people of Angola. Angola is a country in southwest Africa, along the Atlantic coast. For practically all of its history, it has been at war. Its earliest inhabitants were different tribes that were always fighting one another. When European explorers arrived in the 16th century, the Portuguese used the country as a source of slaves. The native tribes hated each other so much, they even sold each other into slavery!

Angola is located on the South Atlantic Coast of West Africa between Namibia and the Republic of the Congo. It also is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia to the east. The country is divided into an arid coastal strip stretching from Namibia to Luanda; a wet, interior highland; a dry savanna in the interior south and southeast; and rain forest in the north and in Cabinda. The Zambezi River and several tributaries of the Congo River have their sources in Angola. The coastal strip is tempered by the cool Benguela current, resulting in a climate similar to coastal Baja California. There is a short rainy season lasting from February to April. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild. The original inhabitants of Angola are thought to have been Khoisan speakers. After 1000, large numbers of Bantu speakers migrated to the region and became the dominant group. Angola derives its name from the Bantu kingdom of Ndongo, whose name for its king is ngola. Explored by the Portuguese navigator Diego Co in 1482, Angola became a link in trade with India and Southeast Asia. Later it was a major source of slaves for Portugal's New World colony of Brazil. Development of the interior began after the Berlin Conference in 1885 fixed the colony's borders, and British and Portuguese investment fostered mining, railways, and agriculture.

The various tribes and ethnic groups tend to cluster in certain areas of the country each with their own customs, language and history. The major ethnic groups are the Ovimnumdu, the largest, who live predominantly in the central highlands; the Mbundu who cluster around Luanda province; and the Bakongo who live in the northwest provinces. Other large groups include the Nganguela and the Lunda-Chockwe. Religion As you might expect in a country that was a Portuguese colony for over 500 years, the majority of the people are either Christian (Roman Catholic) or follow native beliefs. Most incorporate beliefs such as ancestor worship within a more formal religion.

Luanda - Culture Angola was teetering on the brink of war, even while moves were afoot to avert yet another flare-up of this protracted conflict. Human rights abuses were widespread. The government, dominated by the Movement for the Popular Liberation of Angola (MPLA), and the armed opposition Union for the Total Independence (UNITA) restricted freedom of movement, arbitrarily abducted or detained civilians, censored information, and conscripted children. Both sides violated cease-fire agreements and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and looting were a persistent feature of military operations. The food deficit had reached levels which had never been seen in the past. As a result, there was a drastic reduction in people's ability to function and their ability to acquire food. Average daily consumption of calories was reduced to 1 900 Calories per person. All these factors combined increased poverty, disease and infant mortality which reached the frightening figure of 320 per thousand. In order to understand the problem better it is only necessary to add that, according to a survey carried out by the Angolan Statistical Institute, more than 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and 80 percent of food consumed in the country has to be imported.
