Issues Animal welfare Animal Welfare What is animal welfare? Animal welfare refers to the state of the animal. Assessment of welfare includes consideration of the animal's health, behavior, and biological function . Protecting an animal's welfare means providing for its physical and mental needs. Ensuring animal welfare is a human responsibility that includes consideration for all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, humane handling, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia.

Animal welfare is the physical and psychological well-being of non-human animals. The term animal welfare can also mean human concern for animal welfare or a position in a debate on animal ethics and animal rights Systematic concern for animal welfare can be based on awareness that non-human animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well-being, especially when they are used by humans. These concerns can include how animals are killed for food, how they are used for scientific research, how they are kept as pets, and how human activities affect the survival of endangered species. An ancient object of concern in some civilizations, animal welfare began to take a larger place in western public policy in 19th-century Britain. Today it is a significant focus of interest or activity in veterinary science, in ethics, and in animal welfare organizations. There are two forms of criticism of the concept of animal welfare, coming from diametrically opposite positions. One view, dating back centuries, asserts that animals are not consciously aware and hence are unable to experience poor welfare. The other view is based on the

ANIMAL-WELFARE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Welcome! I'm Katherine Noyes, Charity Guide's senior editor for animal-welfare volunteer opportunities. In this directory, you'll find opportunities to make a difference for animals in 15 minutes , a few hours (once, or each week) or during a volunteer vacation I remember when I first became an animal activist. On a cold day in November, a big white stray cat came into my life. He was but a shadow of his current self then — dirty, emaciated, ears black with ear mites — hiding under the bushes near my home. One look, and I knew I had to do something to help.
As soon as I did, my love was returned to me with interest. Animal protection has been my passion ever since. In fact, I’ve found that the more I do to help animals, the happier I feel — it's the best way I've found for coping with all the many problems in this world.
I hope that visiting Charity Guide's Animal-Welfare Volunteer Directory will inspire you too. Whether you have just a few minutes or a whole week of vacation time to protect animals, there are many ways you can help. Try them as your schedule permits, and see how easy it can be to make a difference.
I'll add new volunteer opportunities regularly. So check this directory often and
