Welcome to the First Concepts in Animal Welfare: for Teachers (FCAW) Programme initiated by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). Here you will find information about global animal welfare education programmes, resources, methodology and partners that work with WSPA. This programme was previously known as the International Animal Welfare Education (IN AWE) programme Could you become a partner with us? One of the best ways to address the mistreatment of animals is through improving human understanding of and attitudes towards them. Whilst WSPA works across the education spectrum (eg university students studying veterinary and other animal science courses) the ‘IN AWE’ Programme is for the 5-16 age range: school children, teachers, teacher trainers and curriculum developers. Working with governments, teachers and some Member Societies, WSPA helps embed animal welfare into the school curriculum of several countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Using our global network of animal welfare organisations we work to extend the full range of humane education resources across the globe. To provide food, wool, leather and other materials...
To guard property, assist the disabled, transport goods and people...

International conference on animal welfare education:
Objectives:
This October, the EU is organising the 1st International Conference on Animal Welfare Education. Under the motto "Everyone is responsible," it aims to provide more information to the citizens about educational tools and programs on animal welfare, and to raise awareness about how important it is to educate citizens, farmers, professional animal carers, handlers, slaughterhouse operators, retailers and other stakeholders on how animals should be treated. The conference will also help create a network, at European and international level, between educational institutions that are active in animal welfare, and to develop a harmonised concept of animal welfare education that everyone involved could use. On the occasion of the First International Conference on Animal Welfare Education, the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the European Union are pleased to invite you to a walking dinner. Prevention through Education
The Scottish SPCA's Prevention through Education programme is now in schools and available to book. Our free and groundbreaking interactive programme fits into the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence, most notably helping children develop into responsible citizens within their communities. See how we fit into your curriculum by reading our Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "Sadly, cruelty to animals continues to be a major issue in Scotland but we believe our education programme, which is principally aimed at Primary 4-6 classes, is a vital step in the right direction. "Our inspectors, ambulance drivers and education officers offer free visits and interactive talks and demonstrations which encourage children to treat animals with compassion and respect. "The new programme has now been running across Scotland for over a year and has had fantastic feedback. Our visits really are a wonderful way to help children develop and become responsible citizens."

Animal Welfare Education Database (AWED)
Educators who wish to include concepts such as compassion and respect for animals in their lessons may need guidance and good quality animal welfare resources. It can be difficult for educators who are not familiar with teaching animal welfare to develop their own lessons and they may wonder how to begin. Many NGO’s have developed excellent teaching resources and ready-to-use lessons plans, but descriptions of these resources are often lacking. It can be time consuming for non animal welfare educators to look for these resources. They may have to browse websites of different organisations separately, may not be aware that some organisations produce animal welfare materials at all, or that they can be obtained free or at low cost. It would be helpful if educators could find materials quickly. Therefore it would be more efficient if information about animal welfare resources was included in an online library, accessible to all educators. This is why WSPA and World Animal Net (WAN) have developed the Animal Welfare Education Database (AWED). What is the Animal Welfare Education Database (AWED)?
