    Animal Welfare Education
In the last 10 years we have run over 25 customised animal welfare education courses worldwide making it our most extensive area of training. The objective of this highly practical course is to equip primary and secondary school teachers with the confidence to introduce animal welfare into the classroom, and to develop potential future trainers. The course combines theoretical input on the concept of animal welfare with practical sessions that might include doing a nature trail, making puppets, role play or creating jellyfish from used carrier bags. The course tries to find direct and cross-curricular links to animal welfare in the curriculum of the host country and to give teachers lesson ideas and resources that they can take straight back to the classroom.

Boost to animal welfare education in Peru
Oct 26, 2009 Tweet Training teachers means opening even more pupils' minds to the inspiring world of animals
Thanks to a new three-year agreement with Peru’s Ministry of Education, WSPA is developing a ‘train the trainer’ programme for teachers in the north of the country, spreading the animal welfare message as wide as possible. The agreement, part of WSPA’s International Animal Welfare Education programme targeting the teachers of students aged from 5 to 16 years old, has been endorsed by the Peruvian National Commission for Cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
A proven way to reach out
Similar programmes, running in Costa Rica for 18 years, in Chile since 2006, and in Peru’s capital Lima since 2002, have already trained over 1,000 teachers, meaning an estimated 70,000 young people now have a better understanding of animal welfare. “These programmes have been key to changing attitudes towards animals and we believe they have brought about a reduction in cruelty and animal suffering as a result. We hope to replicate this success in the north of Peru,” explains Carlos Chacón, WSPA education manager.

The faculty consists of nationally recognized experts and representatives from private and academic biomedical research institutions, OLAW, USDA, and AAALAC International. IACUC 101 is a basic course that provides a one-day didactic and interactive exploration of IACUC fundamentals appropriate for new and seasoned IACUC members, IACUC affiliates, and individuals responsible for their institution's animal care program. The course provides a basic yet comprehensive overview of the laws, regulations, and policies that govern the humane care and use of research animals. Participants have the opportunity to practice what they have learned when they are challenged to consider, deliberate, and develop action plans for a variety of potential IACUC scenarios.

Shaping Animal Welfare Education
June 17th, 2010 by AVMA@Work Editor Go to comments Leave a comment Whether it’s farm animals, pets, animals used in research or captive marine mammals, we’re all aware of increasing public interest in animal welfare. The role of the veterinarian in protecting animal health is well-recognized; unfortunately, the role of the veterinarian as a primary protector of animal welfare isn’t always as visible. To become more visible, veterinarians have to take an active role in the wider scientific and social discussions occurring about these issues. Active participation requires a strong knowledge base, and animal welfare education is a critical tool in the veterinarian’s toolbox. That’s why the AVMA is leading a collaborative effort to develop a model curriculum for the study of animal welfare in veterinary medical education. We’re looking to you to help us. We’re seeking nominations and expressions of interest for membership in the AVMA Animal Welfare Curriculum Planning Group , which will create the plan to guide this process. We’re looking for six to 10 subject experts with proven track records in the delivery of animal welfare-related education.

tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.bangkokpost.com/life/family/16848/animal-welfare-education'; tweetmeme_service = 'digg.com'; tweetmeme_source = "BPmylife"; Education is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to improve animal welfare and prevent cruelty, but trying to reshape attitudes and change people's behaviour towards animals is often difficult, requiring effort, knowledge and a long-term commitment. EXPERT: Dr Komkrit Plakprajit, centre, talks about sterilisation and vaccinations. Nonetheless, Bangkok's animal welfare organisation Scad, with the support of three local veterinary clinics, is happy to be rising to this challenge. By sharing knowledge in fun and rewarding ways, its aim is to foster a better understanding of the needs of animals and encourage a keener interest in responsible pet care. In Kittiya Village, a neighbourhood on the southern outskirts of Bangkok, Scad's team lured people to their "Education Day" earlier this month by promising plentiful bargains on clothing and jewellery, free veterinary advice and rabies vaccinations for their pets, and special discounts on sterilisation surgery at three local veterinary clinics. As Scad volunteer Mark Stelzner said: "It appeared to have worked!" Mr Stelzner, a keen photographer, went along to capture the event and support the team led by Scad's community liaison officer, Khun Mot. He said: "There appeared to be lively discussion between the residents and our team, with plenty of opportunities to share information. The vaccination clinic brought out dozens of animals, mostly dogs, from the surrounding area."
