Mulesing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Mulesing is a skilled surgical task that involves the removal of strips of wool-bearing skin from around the breech ( buttocks ) of a sheep to prevent flystrike in regions where it is common. Mulesing is common practice in Australia as a way to reduce the incidence of flystrike (myiasis) on Merino sheep in regions where flystrike (or Myiasis) is common. Mulesing is a controversial practice. The National Farmers Federation says that "mulesing remains the most effective practical way to eliminate the risk of 'flystrike' in sheep" and that "without mulesing up to 3,000,000 sheep a year could die a slow and agonising death from flystrike". "The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) recognises the welfare implications of mulesing of sheep. However, in the absence of more humane alternatives for preventing breech strike, the AVA accepts that the practice of mulesing should continue as a sheep husbandry procedure". The AVA also supports the use of analgesics and the accreditation of mulesing practitioners.

Author(s) Stephanie Yue, Ph.D. Abstract The most common methods of slaughtering crustaceans include splitting, spiking, chilling, boiling, gassing, "drowning," and using chemicals or electricity. As crustaceans do not have a centralized nervous system, unlike vertebrates, they do not die immediately upon destruction of one discrete area, such as the brain. New technologies, including the Crustastun electrical stunning and killing system, may improve the welfare of crustaceans during slaughter, which is critically important as most if not all current techniques are inhumane. Introduction Crustaceans are aquatic arthropods possessing a segmented body, exoskeleton, and jointed, paired limbs. Decapods are those crustaceans with five pairs of legs, the first pair of which form grasping pincers. Lobsters, crabs, prawns, and crayfish are among these large decapod crustacean species with well-developed nervous systems. In 2006, the United States was reported to have wild-caught 190,808 tonnes of lobsters and crabs.

National Survey of State Laws General Civil Laws Pages: Author: Richard Leiter Date: February 20, 2007 Linked as: Extract Animal Welfare Traditionally, animals have been treated as property, not as beings or persons capable of ownership of property or of possessing the right to be free of abuse or harm. Of course, in the past, domestic animals were primarily used for food or transportation, and, hence were a valuable economic tool. Farm and working animals were the only animals that were protected in some measure against abuse, but only insofar as treatment affected the economic value of the animal. Since house pets did not even have the economic value, the law did not specifically recognize them as warranting particular consideration. In this context, the law primarily protected the owners of domesticated farm animals and beasts of burden from economic loss as a result of injury or theft of the animals. In modern times, domesticated animals have achieved enhanced roles in the lives of their owners. House pets have become family members, and some owners, faced with the possibility that their beloved pets may outlive them, and face one-way tickets to the pound, have tried to make provisions for their pets in their wills. So-called “pet trusts” have evolved over the last century and are becoming recognized by more and more states. In addition, the law has also come to recognize a basic “right” of animals to be free from harm.
