Careers With Animal Welfare Organizations
By Melissa Voelker eHow Contributor updated: April 23, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • There are a number of career opportunities within animal welfare organizations. Zoos and nature reserves need educated personnel to take care of the captive animals , while law enforcement agencies need employees to pick up stray animals as well as to operate animal shelters. Besides a desire to work with and help animals, most careers in this field require a certain level of education.
  • Animal Control Officer
  • Animal control officers work with law enforcement agencies to control the stray animal population within cities and counties. He also investigates animal cruelty reports and maintains shelters where stray animals are held and possibly returned to owners or adopted to new families. A high school diploma as well as an associate's or bachelor's degree in a law enforcement field is recommended to become an animal control officer.
  • Zookeeper
  • Zookeepers take care of captive exotic animals, handling the feeding, cleaning and, in some cases, training duties. She may work at zoos, animal parks or reserves. Because the job entails such facets as research, public education and recreation as well as animal care, zookeepers need at least an associate's degree in animal training management, though a bachelor's degree in biology or zoology is recommended.

Press Release: Pet Protection Bill Deserves Support
AB 536 is a Common Sense Solution to Prevent Suffering
A bill (AB 536) to prevent abuse and neglect of animals by sleazy breeders is currently stuck in a state legislative committee, just like unloved animals are stuck in dirty cages filled to the brim at puppy mills around the state. If this bill is killed many animals will suffer and die too. A new law to guarantee minimum standards of humane care is desperately needed. On a daily basis, animals that were originally obtained from puppy mills and other unscrupulous breeders are surrendered to [shelters, humane societies, and animal rescues] because they are sick, aggressive or behave badly. These animals have been treated poorly since birth. Puppy mill pets don't received proper care, love or nutrition. They are abused and neglected, solely to profit the breeder or pet store they are sold at. Sick pets are also a consumer protection problem. People often end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars in veterinary bills to (hopefully) cure a puppy mill pet.
