Animal Welfare Organizations
With no voice of their own, it's impossible for animals to speak up for themselves and stand up for their rights. Fortunately, thousands of caring individuals have stepped up to advocate for the rights and well being of animals of all kinds. From this, countless animal welfare organizations have been established, dedicated to protecting animals from abuse, neglect, cruelty, and laboratory testing.
Animal Welfare v. Animal Rights It's important to understand that animal welfare organizations are not the same as animal rights organizations, which argue that animals should not be used or kept as property by humans. In contrast, animal welfare organizations focus a lot of their efforts on creating laws and strategies designed to protect animals used for labor, entertainment, or companionship. List of Animal Welfare Organizations The following is a list of just some of the thousands of animal welfare organizations currently in existence:
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Animals Defenders International

70. The Abuse Of Animals And Domestic Violence By Ascione, Weber & Wood : The Zero 5
Discusses the implications of survey results for domestic violence programs, animal welfare organizations, and programs serving children of women who are battered by their partners.

The Abuse of Animals and Domestic Violence:
A National Survey of Shelters for Women Who Are Battered By Frank R. Ascione, Ph.D, Claudia V. Weber, M.S., and David S. Wood,
Utah State University, Logan, Utah
Originally published in Society and Animals, 1997, 5(3) The maltreatment of animals, usually pets, may occur in homes where there is domestic violence yet we have limited information about the prevalence of such maltreatment. We surveyed the largest shelter for women who are battered in forty-nine states and the District of Columbia. Shelters were selected if they provided overnight facilities and programs or services for children. Ninety-six percent of the shelters responded and analysis revealed that it is common for shelters to serve women and children who talk about pet abuse. However, only a minority of respondents indicated that they systematically ask about pet maltreatment in their intake interview. We discuss the implications of these results for domestic violence programs, animal welfare organizations, and programs serving children of women who are battered by their partners. "A moment later Francine heard Nicky scream...'Nicky was crying so hard she couldn't talk. I'd never heard a child cry like that. I ... held her in my arms until she calmed down enough to tell me what had happened. Mickey [Francine's husband] had warned her that if he found the cat on the porch he'd wring its neck. When he caught her with it the second time he took it out of her arms and just broke its neck in his two hands'."

Higher fines for animal transport violations a welcome move, but of limited use without proper inspection
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency ( CFIA ) announced on October 27 that it will now charge fines of up to $10,000 to livestock haulers who violate regulations meant to protect animals under the Health of Animals Act. This figure is more than double the previous maximum penalty. The CFHS welcomes this move and hopes it signals a new approach by government to protecting farm animal welfare. If, however, it is not accompanied by improvements to the existing regulations and the CFIA’s inspection and enforcement capacity, we do not believe this change alone will lead to any significant improvements. Over 160,000 shelter pets adopted through holiday adoption drive
Over 160,000 animals have already been adopted from shelters through the Iams “Home 4 The Holidays” adoption campaign. Each year in Canada, over one quarter of a million homeless cats and dogs are temporarily housed in animal shelters. Their lives depend on one thing: people choosing to share their homes with a loving animal in need.

Donate Sponsor Volunteer ... Contact Us We are a dedicated group of people with the goal of providing protection and refuge to homeless and abused animals. We provide shelter, veterinary care, and rehabilitation for life, or until someone like you comes and adopts one of our animals. Although our emphasis is on farm animals, we also have cats and dogs that desperately need a home.
We work closely with other animal welfare organizations including kennel clubs, breed rescue groups, and directly with the public. Our goal is to alleviate overcrowding in our local animal shelters by providing an alternative to traditional sheltering.
In addition to the care of our sheltered animals, we currently have three community support programs:
    • We supply pet food via the Meals on Wheels program to ensure that pets of low income families receive proper nutrition. New Leash on Life program in conjunction with the Black Mountain Women's Correctional Center. We host and sponsor educational programs for children to encourage responsible pet ownership and compassion.

Policy Animal control and animal welfare organizations AVMA policy AVMA Guidelines for Veterinarians and Veterinary Associations Working with Animal Control and Animal Welfare Organizations (Approved by the AVMA Executive Board November 2007) Statement of Position
Veterinarians, veterinary associations, animal control agencies, and animal welfare organizations have a common bond in the preservation of the life, health, and general well-being of animals of all species. Veterinary medical associations, animal control agencies, and animal welfare organizations should promote responsible pet ownership and proper, humane care of animals through published literature and individual counseling by their members and staff. Recommendations to Veterinarians and Veterinary Associations
It is recommended that veterinarians and veterinary associations participate in the activities of animal control and animal welfare organizations. This can best be accomplished through membership and active participation in animal control and animal welfare organizations and by offering advice, professional services, and veterinary skills to these organizations and/or their representatives.
