Factors Influencing Duration
Duration depends on cause and underlying diagnosis. Length of disability depends on the specific diagnosis of the condition causing symptoms and the individual's job requirements. Depending on the reasons for the condition, some individuals may not be able to return to work as quickly as others; disability depends on the type of duties involved and response to treatment.

The typical patient is a young male, aged 20–40, when symptoms of the disease first appear, with chronic pain and stiffness in the lower part of the spine or sometimes the entire spine, often with pain referred to one or other buttock or the back of thigh from the sacroiliac joint. Men are affected more than women by a ratio about of 3:1

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease which affects collagen structures, specifically the joints between the vertebrae of the spine. The joints and ligaments that normally permit the spine to move become inflamed and stiff. The bones of the spine may grow together, causing the spine to become rigid and inflexible. Other joints such as the hips, shoulders, knees, or ankles also may become involved. Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis appear most frequently in young men between the ages of 16 and 35. It is less common in women, whose symptoms are often milder and more difficult to diagnose. About 5% of ankylosing spondylitis cases begin in childhood; boys are more likely to have it than girls. When children develop ankylosing spondylitis, it usually begins in the hips, knees, bottoms of the heels or big toes and may later progress to involve the spine.
The gene is present in 8% of white Americans and 2-3% of African Americans. About 1% of the adult population has this condition and, as expected, the disease is three times more common in whites than in African Americans.

Information on Tendinitis
Description
Tendinitis involves inflammation of a tendon, the fibrous cord that attaches muscle to bone. It usually affects only one part of the body at a time, and usually lasts a short time.
Tendinitis usually affects people over 30, but can occur in younger people active in sports or who do repetitive work.
The areas most commonly affected by tendinitis are the shoulder (rotator cuff tendinitis or impingement syndrome), elbow (tennis elbow or golfer's elbow), wrist and thumb (de Quervain's disease), knee (jumper's knee), and ankle (Achilles tendinitis). Calcific tendinitis, which occurs when calcium deposits build up in a joint, often appears in people with a chronic disease, such as diabetes.

Autoimmune Disorders With Ankylosing Spondylitis
Health Encyclopedia: Autoimmune Diseases And Disorders
Autoimmune diseases are disorders in which the body's immune system reacts against some of its own tissue and produces antibodies to attack itself. To better understand autoimmune diseases, one must understand how the immune system works.

When your body is attackedperhaps by a virus or germs on a nail you stepped onyour immune system defends you. It sees and kills the germs that might hurt you.
But when the system doesn't work right, this process can cause harm. Immune cells can mistake your body's own cells as invaders and attack them. This "friendly fire" can affect almost any part of the body. It can sometimes affect many parts of the body at once. This is called autoimmunity (meaning self-immunity).
No one knows why the immune system treats some body parts like germs. We do know that you can't catch autoimmune diseases from another person.

Related articles Introduction Inflammatory arthropathies affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints are termed "spondyloarthropathies," and the prototype spondyloarthropathy is ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Another spondyloarthropathyreactive arthritis (ReA)is etiologically and therapeutically similar to AS and will therefore be included in this brief review. Other spinal arthropathies include psoriatic arthritis, enteropathic spondyloarthropathy, and rheumatoid arthritis. The etiologies, diagnostic criteria, and integrative treatments for these and other systemic autoimmune disorders have recently been detailed by the current author in a textbook of 477 pages and several thousand references. (1) Laboratory Assessments Integrative Treatments As for other systemic inflammatory "autoimmune" diseases, treatment interventions for AS and ReA must be divided into two categories: 1) long-term curative treatment and 2) crisis management for acute exacerbations. Since inflammatory disorders can result in morbidity and mortality by affecting nonmusculoskeletal systems, such as the eyes, heart, brain, lungs, and kidneys, referral for anti-inflammatory drug therapy (e.g., prednisone, TNF inhibitors, methotrexate) is appropriate to avoid liability issues that result from improper management of acute disease complications.
