Oxford University Press Share NHBS Price: The Anolis lizards are a model group from which to study evolutionary ecology: there are more than 150 species dispersed over the islands of the Caribbean, providing innumerable comparisons of physical form and behaviour. Their evolutionary divergence corresponds in geological time with the plate tectonic origins of the islands. Based on empirical work with these lizards, and on the work of others, Roughgarden has, over two decades, developed theoretical models of evolutionary ecology in the field which may well point to new directions in modelling and field biology.

Anolis lizards are one of the best examples of both adaptive radiation and convergent evolution . Populations of lizards on isolated islands diverge to occupy separate ecological niches , mostly in terms of the location within the vegetation where they forage (such as in the crown of trees vs. the trunk vs. underlying shrubs). These divergences in habitat are accompanied by morphological changes primarily related to moving on the substrate diameter they most frequently encounter, with twig ecomorphs having short limbs while trunk ecomorphs have long limbs.

Anolis Lizards of the Greater Antilles:
Using Phylogeny to Test Hypotheses
Author: Jennifer (Johnson) Collins
OVERVIEW
Anolis lizards on the islands might have evolved. They begin by observing the body structures and habitat of different species, then plot this data on a map of the islands to look for patterns in their distribution. From the patterns they observe, students develop alternative hypotheses about how these lizards colonized the islands and evolved. To test their hypotheses, they are given a phylogeny which they color code according to their previous data. By combining both types of data, students make a final hypothesis about how they think the lizards colonized the islands.
The objectives of this lesson are to teach students how to:
1) Identify patterns in biological data, such as morphological characters (physical features), habitat, and geographical distribution.
2) Form multiple evolutionary hypotheses to explain the patterns they observe.
3) Test their hypotheses using a provided phylogenetic tree/cladogram.
Terms: distribution, speciation, phylogenetic tree, evolution

Male brown anole displaying from perch. T he brown anole is a small Caribbean lizard that colonized south Florida and Mexico about 50-60 years ago, and more recently, Hawaii. At least eight other Caribbean lizards have become established in south Florida, but only the brown anole is expanding its range into other southeastern states. This species is arguably the most abundant terrestrial vertebrate in peninsular Florida, and often reaches densities of more than one individual per square meter in disturbed habitats! The brown anole is thought to be responsible for a dramatic decline of previously stable urban and rural populations of the green anole, the only anole native to the United States. Green anoles often undergo a habitat shift and disappear within a few years after brown anole arrival. The two species are similar in size and overlap considerably in their diets, suggesting dietary resource competition. Predation on green anole hatchlings has also been demonstrated, suggesting that an ecological double-whammy termed "intra-guild predation" (competitors that also eat each other) might better describe the interaction. Despite declines, green anole populations often remain viable in the face of dense brown anole populations when understory vegetation is present, suggesting that suitable cover for hatchlings is important for long-term green anole survival. This illustrates how a powerful synergism between habitat alteration and biological invasions can affect native species.

    Anolis chrysolepis
This species, native to Trinidad, has a red dewlap below the throat, extended as a signal to other lizards. Other species of Anolis in Trinidad and Tobago have a yellow or greenish dewlap, and a longer snout. A. chrysolepis is a rarely-seen inhabitant of forests.
    Male Anolis wattsi
Native to Antigua, this is the only species in Trinidad and Tobago in which the sexes are of very different appearance. Males are orange with bright blue on the head, and females (below) are brown with pale stripes along the sides and the centre of the back.
    Female Anolis wattsi
This species spends about a third of the time on the ground, the rest climbing on trees, bushes, walls and fences. Other species of Anolis introduced to Trinidad and Tobago spend less than 5% of their time on the ground.
    Anolis aeneus sleeping
A brown lizard with dark spots or cross bars, native to Grenada. Anolis lizards sleep at night, usually holding on to a leaf at the end of a branch where they cannot be reached by predators. This one is on a window bar.
    Anolis trinitatis
This species was first scientifically described in 1863 using specimens from Trinidad. Only later was it found to be introduced here, and really native to St. Vincent, but by the rules the original name "
