Pyramid Ant Dorymyrmex spp. Foraging Characteristics: Medium sized, pale orange to dark brown, slender and elongate ant. Foraging singly, moving quickly. Nest is distinctive cone-shaped mound in sandy soil. Ant does not sting or act aggressively. Nests not large. Workers have strong odor when crushed described by some as rotting coconuts. Diet: Hunt live insects, including winged fire ants. Collect honeydew from sap-sucking insects. Detailed Description: 2-4 mm (1/12–1/6 in) long. Integument thin. Twelve-segmented antennae Propodeum bearing a tooth-like protuberance projecting vertically in side view. Ventral surface of head with a few very long, curved hairs, used for carrying pellets of damp sand. Subfamily Dolichoderinae Most Common Complaint: Crater-like nests in open areas of yard. These ants are outdoor species and chemical control is usually unwarranted. Flight Season: Fall to spring or some species, year-round for others. Warm and humid weather.

The Ants
Ants are among the most amazing and fascinating creatures in the world. They are all social and live in large groups of mostly sterile sisters who work to raise the sexual offspring of their mother the Queen. The fact that ants live in communities, make gardens, keep farm animals, fight wars and enslave other ants has fascinated mankind for as long as we have observed them. There are a lot of books written on ants and I hope that what you read here will wet your appetite to learn more about these delightful and complex creatures.
There are 12,400 known species of ants in the world today and they have a wide variety of lifestyles. For instance the giant Australian Bull Ants which can be over 2.5 cms long, live very simple lives and the Queens and Workers look very similar. In contrast the Leaf cutting ants of Central and South America have a much more complicated social structure in their nests. There can be 3 or 4 different sizes of workers as well as large soldiers, males and Giant Queens and Gynes (a gyne is an unmated female sexual, she is called a Queen after she has mated).
Ants love nectar and are often seen visiting flowers.

Ghost Ant
Tapinoma melanocephalum Foraging Characteristics: Tiny ant with dark head and pale gaster and legs, thorax often dark. May not look ant-like on casual inspection. Runs in quick, erratic movements when disturbed. Sometimes can be found trailing, where movement is more slow and deliberate. On close inspection some trailing workers can be seen carrying brood (larvae and pupae). Workers may emit acrid, coconut-like odor when crushed. Most Common Complaints: Foragers in kitchens and bathrooms on sinks, counters, and floors. Indoor colonies can be controlled with baits. Access of foragers entering from outdoors through cracks and crevices or screens should be restricted with barrier sprays. Flight Season: Flightless queens. Multiple queens may be spread out into multiple subcolonies. Usually nest in disturbed areas, in flowerpots, under objects on the ground, under loose bark, and at the bases of palm fronds. Indoor nests in small spaces such as cracks, spaces between books, or wall voids. Indoor foragers often come from outside. This is a very common pest inside homes.

Argentine Ant Linepithema humile (formerly Iridomyrmex humilis Foraging Characteristics: Medium sized ant with a slender body, uniformly light brown or brown. Workers smell stale, greasy, or musty when crushed. Workers often present in large numbers moving in trails. Trails may be similar to white-footed ant trails, but ants are more slender and move more quickly so foraging trails may not appear as condensed. Workers may overwhelm outdoor eating areas, even entering parked cars. Detailed Description: 2.2-2.6 mm (1/11-1/10 in) long. Twelve-segmented antennae without club One segmented petiole Petiole with vertically projecting scale. Body hairs usually absent from thorax No sting. Subfamily Dolichoderinae Most Common Complaint: Many foragers inside and out. Does not normally nest indoors, and can often be excluded from buildings. Spraying outdoors may reduce numbers around buildings, but more may move in from surrounding areas. Baiting may reduce colonies outdoors.

  • Ant identification is not easy. Ants are social insects, living in colonies that may number thousands. Ant queens lay eggs. Ant colonies of some species of ants have only one queen while other species may have many queens. Worker ants forage for food for the colony, care for the queen and young, and defend the colony. Workers can be one size (monomorphic) or two or more sizes (polymorphic). Colonies may reproduce by swarming or budding. Ant nests commonly consist of underground tunnels and chambers. Some species make mounds of earth or ant hills. The queens stay in the nest and workers bring them food. It is the workers you may see in and around your structure.
To control ants, homeowners must choose a treatment to target the infesting species. Ants must be treated differently, depending upon the species. We will be adding Technical information on various ant species. Being informed of the target pest will always make a difference.

      Ants
Diana E. Wheeler and Steven W. Rissing Ants are familiar creatures. Although they are small as individuals, they are social, living in cooperative colonies, and these colonies are huge. Ant colonies are made up entirely of females, and include one or more queens and many workers. All of the ants streaming in and out of a nest entrance are workers, who protect the colony, collect food, and care for the larvae. Even though the workers are females, they lack the reproductive abilities of the queen, who lives deep within the nest and does little besides produce eggs. Harvester ant All ants’ bodies are divided into three parts. The head includes the antennae that detect smells, compound eyes, and capable jaws. All legs are attached to the mid-section, called the thorax. The gaster is the last segment and contains most of the internal organs, including defensive organs, including the glands that produce formic acid. When working with ants, beware the gaster! Ants are most closely related to wasps. Imagine a wasp without its wings—it looks like an ant. Flying ants (the new queens and males) are often mistaken for wasps.

Ants As Pets Ants As Pets The Ant (Hymenoptera in groups can make great pets. Many people consider the ant a pest before thinking of them as pets. Ants are a big part of ecology and anyone wanting to take the time to build an art farm soon realizes the socialization of these insects and the role they play. Some History The intelligence of the ant society-the tactics of the fighters and the husbandry of the farmers-is achieved through the social act of a sort of kiss called trophallaxis. During the kiss one or both of the ants gives the other a taste of the chemicals it has in its crop. The crop is a special community organ separate from the individual's digestive stomach. Its a kind of chemical language. The Chemicals stored in it are complex mixtures, modified by each kiss but originating mainly in secretions given off by the larvae and eggs in the colony. The composition of the mixture constitutes a chemical message which acts on the simple hereditary nervous system of an ant to communicate the needs and excitements of its society and tell the insect what it should be doing. All ant societies are divided into three castes: queens that found new colonies and thereafter function as egg-laying machines; winged males that take nuptial flight once with a queen, fertilizing her for life, then die; runt sterile females that lead tirelessly neuter lives that perform a variety of tasks. Some act as nurses, some as housekeepers, while others act as hunters and soldiers.

http://birds.ecoport.org/Behaviour/EBanting.htm
EcoBirds home birding participate site map ... EcoPort news ecology conservation identification behaviour ... Nesting Flight Song Migration Anting Courting Rituals Anting Perhaps some of the strangest behaviour indulged in by birds is anting . Anting occurs in two different forms and for the sake of this essay it does not always involve ants. Most anting, however, does involve ants and over 250 different species of birds have been recorded displaying this behaviour at one time or another. Anting occurs either as active anting, in which the bird picks an ant up and applies it to its plumage, or passive anting. Normally, the ant during active anting will be stroked along the feathers, usually the flight feathers. Starlings ( Sternus vulgaris ) actively seek out Formicine ants which suggests that the ants' ability to spray formic acid is an important consideration. It has been observed by many people that during anting the birds appear to get exceedingly excited. After the ant has been applied to the feathers it is either discarded or eaten. Other active anting birds are Babblers, Tanagers and Weavers. Passive anting involves the bird finding an ants' nest and lying down among the ants. This process often likened to bathing in ants is not as well studied as active anting. Birds which are passive anters include the European Jay, Crows and Waxbills.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines Exhibition
Retablo Our Guest book

Anting Anting, a group of artists based in Cavite, holds a collective exhibition from June 13 to July 31, 2002 at the Main Gallery of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It centers on the concept of the anting anting (talisman) of Filipino folk culture, which is viewed as a source of spell and potency in everyday life. Interpreted in a wide range of expressions, from painting to performance, the exhibition seeks to reflect on and challenge how people come to terms with belief and express it in many ways. At a time when images flood society and faith stands on unstable ground, the exhibition takes a pause and ponders the very foundation of the power of appearance and the charm that lies beneath.
