      What Is Aplastic Anemia?
Aplastic anemia is serious. Children with this disease need treatment quickly to survive. In this disease, the bone marrow shuts down and stops making new blood cells. Bone marrow is found in the soft, spongy center of the long bones of the arms and legs, as well as in the central skeleton, including the spine, skull and hips. The marrow makes immature cells called stem cells. The stem cells, in turn, make the three major types of blood cells:
    • White blood cells - fight infection Red blood cells - carry oxygen Platelets - make the blood clot and stop bleeding
    • Without enough of these blood cells, children are at risk for serious health problems.

Anemia
Aplastic Anemia
Three kinds of blood cells make up the body's blood supply. Bone marrow produces white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Aplastic anemia can occur when bone marrow does not produce blood cells normally. Patients who have aplastic anemia may suffer from an increase in infections and uncontrolled bleeding. The condition can occur at any age, and in some cases physicians link it to exposure to certain chemicals or drugs. In other cases, physicians link aplastic anemia to an autoimmune condition such as lupus, a bone marrow disease or a viral infection.
Treatment
Treatment for aplastic anemia depends upon its cause and severity. In mild cases, physicians may recommend a period of observation. Moderate cases may require blood transfusions and medications to suppress the immune system. Severe cases may require bone marrow transplantation.

Causes
Aplastic anemia results from injury to the blood stem cells, immature cells in the bone marrow that give rise to all of other blood cells types. The injury causes a decrease in the number of every type of blood cell in the body red cells, white cells, and platelets. Low numbers of red cells, white cells, and platelets is a condition called pancytopenia. Idiopathic means the cause is unknown. However, idiopathic aplastic anemia is thought to occur when the body reacts against its own cells. This is called an autoimmune disorder. The disease may be acute or chronic , and may get worse over time. There are no known risk factors. Aplastic anemia may also be caused by certain medical conditions (such as pregnancy or lupus) or exposure to some toxins or drugs (including chemotherapy). See:

Home Aplastic Anemia Aplastic Anemia What is Aplastic Anemia? Aplastic anemia occurs when the bone marrow produces too few of all types of blood cells: red cells, white cells, and platelets. A reduced number of red blood cells causes the hemoglobin (a type of protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues of the body) to drop. A reduced number of white blood cells cause the patient to be susceptible to infection. A reduced number of platelets can cause the blood not to clot as easily as normal. What causes Aplastic Anemia? Aplastic anemia in children has multiple causes, but many causes are "idiopathic", meaning they occur sporadically for no known reason. Other causes are secondary, resulting from a previous illness or disorder. Acquired causes may include: a history of specific infectious diseases such as hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a history of taking certain medications, exposure to certain toxins such as heavy metals, exposure to radiation, or a history of an autoimmune disease such as lupus. Children may also inherit a disorder that predisposes them to developing aplastic anemia. Some examples include:
