During apnea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged. Depending on the patency of the airways there may or may not be a flow of gas between the lungs and the environment; gas exchange within the lungs and cellular respiration is not affected.

edit Causes
Apnea can be voluntarily achieved (e.g., "holding one's breath"), drug -induced (e.g., opiate toxicity), mechanically induced (e.g., strangulation or choking ), or it can occur as a consequence of neurological disease or trauma Voluntary apnea can be achieved by closing the vocal cords , simultaneously keeping the mouth closed and blocking the nasal vestibule , or constantly activating expiratory muscles.

Obstructive sleep apnea ICD G ICD eMedicine ... MeSH Sleep apnea (or sleep apnoea in British English ) is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep . Each pause in breathing, called an apnea , can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Similarly, each abnormally low breathing event is called a hypopnea . Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram , or "sleep study". There are three forms of sleep apnea: central (CSA), obstructive (OSA), and complex or mixed sleep apnea (i.e., a combination of central and obstructive) constituting 0.4%, 84% and 15% of cases respectively. In CSA, breathing is interrupted by a lack of respiratory effort; in OSA, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow despite respiratory effort and

      Apnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is still an under-diagnosed sleeping disorder, in part because people with it have no problem getting to sleep and can often feel very well rested when they first wake up.   I was diagnosed with it after a sleep study that was done in my home (a very rare thing these days) in December 1995.  Now most sleep studies are done (more cheaply) in a sleep center.  While apnea alone is not realistically a life or death condition, it can lead to dangerous situations that contribute to serious injury or death.  It is also very much about quality of life.  Since my diagnosis I have been getting treatment.  However, losing even 25 pounds can cause one to be symptom-free and not be in need of treatment anymore. Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea include:
      • Being overweight. Nodding off in inappropriate and sometimes dangerous places (like behind the wheel), especially in the afternoons.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)
affects an estimated 20 million Americans and is associated with chronic disease states such as hypertension, heart failure, stroke, and morbid obesity. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea can contribute to an improved quality of life and may decrease apnea-related morbidity and mortality.
Sleep Data is a nationwide market leader in providing expert home-based diagnostic testing for sleep apnea syndrome.
Since 1995 Sleep Data has performed thousands of tests in all fifty states. Testing is performed rapidly in the comfort and privacy of the patient's home. The professional staff is university trained and has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. Sleep Data utilizes a multi-channel cardiopulmonary recorder that has been scientifically validated as a means for reliably and accurately detecting sleep apnea syndrome. Upon completion of the study, all raw data is analyzed and interpreted by trained technicians and physicians who specialize in pulmonary sleep medicine.

While it takes a polysomnogram (PSG), also called a "sleep study" to diagnose apnea, you can often tell if someone has apnea if you listen while the person sleeps. There are several typical telltale signs of apnea. The first sign would be a person who snores (often very loud). Somewhere during the person's snoring, there is a brief period of silence which lasts anywhere from ten seconds to two minutes. That silence is followed by a loud snort or gasp as the person again begins to breathe. What exactly is apnea? Sleep apnea is a common disorder, which clinically defined, means a person stops breathing while sleeping for a period of at least 10 seconds, and can occur from several times an hour to several hundred times a night, or more. The telltale signs of apnea are excessive daytime sleepiness and a compromised quality of life, including an overflow into social and emotional areas. Is there more than one kind of apnea?

What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops and starts during sleep. It is usually associated with snoring. The sleep apnea syndrome (sleep apnea plus daytime somnolence) is believed to affect 2% and 4% of adult females and males respectively.
