A basic Polysomnograph (PSG), or "Sleep Study" can analyze your personal needs for a healthy, and enjoyable night. Not only helping you stay asleep but, helping you feel more alive and rejuvenated during a typical day. So take a look and we may be able to help!
If you experience any one of the following effects, you might be suffering from a sleep disorder called, "Sleep Apnea". Some of these symptoms are: Loud snoring, headaches, high blood pressure, a dry mouth upon awakening, heartburn, depression, difficulty concentration, insomnia, frequent trips to the restroom, restless sleep, gasping or choking immediately upon awakening, and most importantly, progressive weight gain. If one of these sounds familiar don't hesitate to mention this to your physician. Doctors are well aware of the Sleep Clinic and will order a study for you. You may even want to ask your spouse/bed partner about your sleeping habits.
An individual suffering from SLEEP APNEA will go through a series of respiratory events called Apneas/Hypopneas. When this occurs, your airway will become partially or even completely blocked, causing you to "stop breathing" for up to 1-2 minutes at a time. Causing a chain of events, such as a dramatic decrease in Oxygen saturation, interference of sleep stages, body movements, etc. The significance is a very disturbed sleep cycle, which will cause excessive daytime sleepiness (fatigue) that can rule your day. You may ask why tiresome evenings can rule your day or even your life. If you've ever nodded off at the wheel of your vehicle, you might agree. Sleep Apnea is the number one leading cause of commercial driving accidents. So if there is any question that you may be experiencing Sleep Apnea do not ignore your condition. It should be taken very seriously.

64. Sleep Apnea Surgery - Dr. Kasey Li - Palo Alto, California
Developed by a world renown surgeon, Dr. Kasey Li, for educational purposes. It provides in-depth information on the surgical treatment of sleep disordered breathing.
http://www.sleepapneasurgery.com/
In 1991, a national commission on sleep disorders reported that there are more than 40 million undiagnosed and untreated chronically ill sleep disorders patients

INTRODUCTION TO SLEEP APNEA
Do you:
  • snore every night? wake suddenly during the night perspiring, choking or gasping for air? wake in the morning with headaches or a sore throat? fight falling asleep during the day, at work or while driving? feel irritable, have memory loss or a lack of concentration each day? suffer with obesity, reflux or high blood pressure?
Sleep disorders are a silent epidemic affecting the world's population. The debilitating conditions of these disorders include insomnia, persistent sleep deprivation, restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea. Truly fortunate are those individuals who, over an average lifetime, will experience 219,000 hours of restful nocturnal slumber. But for more than one third of the population, each night becomes an endless battle of interruptions caused by lifestyle choices, work schedules or poor health. It is well documented that disordered sleeping becomes progressively apparent as we age, with 40 percent of the adult population snoring. Chronic snoring is a major symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Unfortunately, 80 to 90 percent of adults with clinically significant obstructive sleep apnea remain undiagnosed. The effects of sleep apnea are not limited to adults; mouth breathing is a red flag for obstructive sleep apnea among sleeping children.

Apnea of prematurity
Apnea is breathing that slows down or stops from any cause. Apnea of prematurity refers to short episodes of stopped breathing in babies who were born before they were due.
Causes
There are several reasons why newborns, especially premature babies, may have apnea, including:
  • Their brain is not fully developed The muscles that keep the airway open are weak
Other stresses in a sick or premature baby may worsen apnea, including:
  • Anemia Feeding problems Heart or lung problems Infection Low oxygen levels Overstimulation Temperature problems
Symptoms
Newborns, especially preemies, often have an irregular breathing pattern. These babies will have short episodes (5 - 10 seconds) of either shallow breathing or stopped breathing (apnea). These episodes are followed by periods of normal breathing. When there is very shallow or no breathing (apnea), the baby may also have a drop in heart rate. This heart rate drop is called bradycardia. Some babies may also have poor color and an ill-looking appearance. Apnea episodes that last longer than 20 seconds are considered serious.

Why Are Sleep Disorders So Popular Suddenly?

What Changes Do You Forsee In The Treatment Of Sleep Disorders?

What Is Sleep Apnea, And How Do You Treat It?
... Sleep Apnea May Help Cause Heart Failure Strokes are Twice as Likely for People with Sleep Apnea
People who have the nightly episodes of breathlessness called obstructive sleep apnea are at least twice as likely to suffer strokes or die as steady breathers, a study reports. The study, which involved more than 1,000 patients, confirms a flurry of smaller studies suggesting that apnea increases a person's stroke risk as much as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes. Strokes are the nation's third-leading cause of death and biggest cause of disability, according to the American Heart Association. Each year, about 700,000 people have strokes, and 250 die from them. Obstructive sleep apnea is common, too; about 12 million Americans have it. It has been linked with obesity, high blood pressure, clogged arteries and heart failure. Most apnea sufferers don't realize they have the condition, which results from a loss of airway muscle tone during sleep. Slack muscles collapse on themselves, choking off the glow of oxygen to the lungs. When oxygen levels drop low enough, the person wakens and starts breathing again.

BREATHING DISORDERS DURING SLEEP National Institutes of Health
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute "You Can Snore Your Life Away." This sounds more like a joke than a warning. But, in fact, habitual loud snoring is the most common symptom of breathing disorders that occur during sleep. The person who snores not only sleeps restlessly, but also is at risk for serious disorders of the heart and lungs. Snoring can therefore be lifethreatening because it can lead to high blood pressure, irregular heart beats, heart attacks, and sudden death. Normal breathing must continue at all times whether awake or asleep. The act of breathing is an automatic, highly regulated mechanical function of the body. In healthy sleeping individuals, most muscular and neural activities will slow or even shut down but respiration goes on under a neuromuscular "auto pilot." However, if something goes wrong with the auto pilot during sleep, breathing may become erratic and inefficient. Understanding Sleep Sleep is a complex neurological state. Its primary function is rest and restoring the body's energy levels. Repeated interruption of sleep by breathing abnormalities such as cessation of breathing (apnea) or heavy snoring, leads to fragmented sleep and abnormal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Excessive daytime sleepiness and various disorders of the heart, lungs, and the nervous system result.

Sleep Apnea
Information
Sleep Apnea - from the Basics to Advanced Information.
Sleep Apnea
is a disorder of breathing during sleep. Typically it is accompanied by loud snoring. Apnea during sleep consist of brief periods throughout the night in which breathing stops. People with sleep apnea do not get enough oxygen during sleep. There are 2 major types.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
is the most common type and is due to an obstruction in the throat during sleep. Bed partners notice pauses approx. 10 to 60 seconds between loud snores. The narrowing of the upper airway can be a result of several factors including inherent physical characteristics, excess weight, and alcohol consumption before sleep.
Central Sleep Apnea
- caused by a delay in the signal form the brain to breath . With both obstructive and central apnea you must wake up briefly to breathe, sometimes hundreds of times during the night. Usually there is no memory of these brief awakenings.
Most Common Symptoms
  • Loud Snoring Waking up unrefreshed and having trouble staying awake during the day Waking up with headaches Waking up during the night with the sensation of choking Waking up sweating Frequent trips to the bathroom during the night Insomnia - problem staying asleep
  • Being overweight but not necessary Waking and gasping for air
