The ECC recommended that a 200 ha Portland Aquaculture Zone be made available for marine aquaculture within a larger investigation area. The precise location of the PAFR is shown on the map below. The PAFR was selected from the larger investigation area following the completion of a detailed environmental characterisation study and further consultation. Consistent with the recommendations of the ECC, the zone was located to avoid low profile reef and so as to not present a hazard to commercial shipping. Prior to commercial development of the PAFR, navigation marks meeting international requirements will be deployed.
The PAFR is located in Portland Bay approximately 2.6km offshore (north-east) from Blacknose Point, and has the following coordinates:

Your International Aquaculture Network Aquaculture has become a multi-billion dollar global industry. It's great potential to supplement dwindling wild caught species, provide quality protein, produce income and to offer employment is widely recognized. 17th International Pectinid Workshop The 17th International Pectinid Workshop will be held from 22nd to 28th April, 2009, in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain). The International Pectinid Workshop series commenced in 1975 and have been held in a range of venues around the globe during the past 33 years. The workshop is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge concerning the scallop species of the world, particularly those of commercial importance. Pectinids have a worldwide economic and ecological importance as evidenced by the more than 125 participants from 25 countries who usually attend the workshops. The 17th Workshop will focus on the aquaculture, fisheries, physiology and reproduction, biochemistry and genetics of scallops. Participants will have the unique opportunity to “network” with fellow researchers, resource managers, aquaculturists, conservationists, fishermen, and economists. The International Pectinid Workshops have traditionally been a week-long meeting for scientists, fisheries managers, academics, students and industry participants who specialise on scallops. The meetings are marked by informality and open communication. The Workshops have always been a venue in which as much business and information exchange takes place outside the main meeting rooms as it does during formal sessions. All individuals involved with Pectinids are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration as an oral or poster presentation at the workshop. The workshop will include presentations in six topics above mentioned (for details see instructions for authors).

    Course Description
Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production sectors worldwide, providing food for millions of people and constituting an essential source of income for many rural economies. The large scale and rapid growth rate of the aquaculture sector is inevitably accompanied by sustainability challenges. Some farming practices lead to the depletion of natural resources and, significant negative impact aquatic ecosystems. This course will appeal to graduates who want to engage in aquaculture and fisheries research. It offers an excellent one-year platform for students wishing to pursue a PhD at a later stage.

    Course Description
    Compulsory Modules:
BIOM37 Conservation of Aquatic Resources (20 credits)
BIOM61 Literature Review (20 credits) Followed by a research project in Part Two:
Research is an integral part of this MRes programme. In this module students are given the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research leading to a dissertation written as a scientific research paper. An oral presentation on the project will be given in October after submission of the dissertation.
