    Lake Elkhorn
    History
Lake Elkhorn, in the Village of Owen Brown is a 37 acre lake on the Elkhorn Branch of the Little Patuxent River. George Harold Dasher for whom the neighborhood of Dasher Green is named, lived all his life in Howard County, farming the land with his brothers at Elkhorn Farms. The new lake, park and arboretum derive their name from the original Dasher farm. Lake Elkhorn was created in 1974 by building an earth filled dam, which impounds 225 acre feet of water drawing from a watershed of about 2500 acres. A concrete spillway at one side of the dam permits controlled overflow. At the head of the lake, in what was a marsh, a silt pond with a filter dike was formed. In a cove at the lake's edge, near the Owen Brown Village Center is a major small boat dock which provides boaters with access to the lake.
    Dedication
    Warren Raymond
This arboretum is dedicated to a friend of both the Howard County Forestry Board and of the Columbia Association. An avid musician and gardener Warren studied at Longwood Gardens to become a Certified Tree Expert and, working for the Columbia Association, became the Assistant Division Director for Open Space. Warren joined the Howard County Forestry Board in 2000 and helped with the planning of this arboretum at Lake Elkhorn. He is fondly remembered by all who knew and worked with him.

Tennessee Certified Arboreta Listing The Tennessee Urban Forestry Council, in cooperation with the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs is certifying arboreta throughout the state of Tennessee .  In Tennessee an arboretum is defined as an area where there is a significant amount of woody vegetation in tree form that is cultivated for educational, scientific and/or aesthetic purposes.  The size and location of an arboretum can vary from a small neighborhood school with 30 different species of labeled trees to a large research park with over 120 tree species labeled and staffed with full time employees and volunteers.  To be certified as an arboretum in Tennessee, strict standards must be met.  Please read the program guidelines carefully to make sure that your site qualifies.  All arboreta must be opened to the public, the trees must be properly labeled for educational purposes, and the trees must be properly maintained during the period of certification. 52. Botanical Centers Gardens
Personal reviews of botanical gardens, with links.
    http://www.plantx.com/botanical_centers_gardens.htm
what makes a good botanical center. good botany : a botanical center must be focused on the study of plants. It is best if that study is regional in that the local flora is the primary focus or is the launch pad for broader study, For example Denver Botanical has focused on plants that grow in high elevation xeric environments. They have a great collection of native cacti and local plants in which to build an international collection that is useful to landscapers, and patrons of the center good connections to other botanical centers: Kew gardens is probable the best at this because of its historic relationship to the crown and the British Empire. You will see the Kew relationship all over the world as is true of the Huntington and The New York Botanical. a qualified staff that has a true love of plants and an intimate knowledge of plants: San Antonio is a good example of this dicotemy Paul Cox who was the interim director for a time should really be the director because of his knowledge and enthusiasim for plants. The present director has shown more of an affinity for bedding plants and planning weddings. These things sometimes are necessary to a botanical center but should never over shadow the primary importance of botany. If you look at the great centers you will always see a great botanist at the forefront. Sometimes this is hard for patrons to swallow who are more interested in throwing parties and using botanical centers as backdrops for society parties.

Welcome to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens
The Alameda Gardens were founded in 1816 at the initiative of the Governor, General George Don in order to provide an area for recreation for the residents of Gibraltar. For many years they served this purpose but in the 1970s they fell into a state of disrepair. The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens project began in June 1991 when the Government of Gibraltar contracted a firm of environmental managers, Wildlife (Gibraltar), to restore the gardens and convert them into a botanic garden. The Gardens therefore aim to: restore the aesthetic beauty and interest of the Alameda for the benefit of visitors to the gardens establish a living collection representative of Gibraltar and its hinterland; display a collection of plants from Mediterranean climatic zones around the world; contribute towards the conservation of the flora of Gibraltar and its hinterland; establish a collection of succulents from around the world; contribute towards the dissemination of information about plants, their economic value and their conservation by means of an active educational programme.
