The award recognizes individuals who have given sustained, distinguished service to the cause of industrial archeology. Criteria for selection are as follows: (1) The recipient must have given noteworthy, beyond-the-call-of duty service, over an extended period of time, to the cause of industrial archeology. (2) The type of service for which the recipient is recognized is unspecified, but must be for other than academic publication. (3) It is desirable but not required that the recipient be, or previously have been, a member of the SIA. (4) The award may be made only to living individuals. The General Tools Award was established in 1992 through the generosity of Gerald Weinstein [SIA], chairman of the board of General Tools Manufacturing, Inc. of New York City, and the Abraham and Lillian Rosenberg Foundation. The Rosenbergs founded General Hardware, the predecessor to General Tools. The award consists of an engraved sculpture (''The Plumb Bob") and a cash prize.

I'd like to thank LeeAnn and Angela from Spirited History for having me on their program. I hope thier listeners found the information interesting. In the news: IUSSA was quoted in the Boston Globe and Boston.com
The USS Salem was ordered in 1943, launched in 1947 and finally commissioned in 1949. She served 10 years before she was sent to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet and finally made her way to Quincy in 1994 to become part of the Naval Ships Association.
In May of 1780 James Robertson and his party built a fort on a bluff overlooking the Cumberland River. Over the next few years the folks who came to live in and around the fort discussed laying out a proper town for a settlement. In May of 1784 lawmakers passed an act at the behest of James Robertson, who had been elected to the General Assembly, that a town must be laid out near the fort. The fort was named Nashborough after General Francis Nash from NC, who had fought during the Revolutionary War.
During the seige of Boston many fortifications were built around the city. Most were simple earthworks. The Roxbury Upper Fort was said to be one of the best built at the time. Sadly, it was demolished to make way for a water tower and talkof rebuilding the fort as a sort of 'living history' monument never amounted to much.

All around us, the Mogollon Rim is a wilderness of ethereal beauty, carved majestically into unmatched proportions. To our north and accessible from Highway 87 north of Strawberry, the Rim Road, FR 300, is a twisting, graveled legacy to settlers and cavalry tenacity. The community of Pine was settled in 1879 by Mormon pioneers, who endured many hardships during their settlement of this untamed country. But through their determination and faith, Pine survived. Much of what is displayed in the Pine-Strawberry Museum today is in tribute to the dedication and hard work of our founding families.

    Archeological Remote Sensing
Now more than ever, archeological research is interdisciplinary: botany, forestry, soil science, hydrology - all of which contribute to a more complete understanding of the earth, climate shifts, and how people adapt to large regions. As a species, we've been literally blind to the universe around us. If the known electromagnetic spectrum were scaled up to stretch around the Earth's circumference, the human eye would see a portion equal to the diameter of a pencil. Our ability to build detectors that see for us where we can't see, and computers that bring the invisible information back to our eyesight, will ultimately contribute to our survival on Earth and in space. Remote sensing can be a discovery technique, since the computer can be programmed to look for distinctive "signatures" of energy emitted by a known site or feature in areas where surveys have not been conducted. Such "signatures" serve as recognition features or fingerprints. Such characteristics as elevation, distance from water, distance between sites or cities, corridors, and transportation routes can help to predict the location of potential archeological sites.

    GENERAL TOOLS AWARD
2003 General Tools Award Winner - Alex Barbour Photograph by Perry Green Select on thumbnail photo above to enlarge Bob Passfield made the following presentation of the 2003 General Tools award at the SIA 2003 Annual Meeting:
"The Society for Industrial Archeology General Tools Award for Distinguished Service to Industrial Archeology recognizes individuals who have given sustained, distinguished service to the cause of industrial archeology. Nominations for the award may be made by any SIA member in good standing. The criteria for selection are as follows: the recipient must have given noteworthy service, over an extended period of time, to the cause of industrial archeology. The type of service is unspecified, but must be for other than academic publication. It is desirable, but not required, that the recipient be a member of the SIA. And finally, the award may be made only to a living individual.
"The General Tools Award was established in 1992 by Gerry Weinstein, Chairman of the General Tools Manufacturing Company, and is funded through an endowment created by the Abraham and Lillian Rosenberg Foundation. Before proceeding with the award, I would like to express my appreciation to the other members of the General Tools Award Committee, Betsy Fahlman and Pat Malone, for their substantial contributions to the evaluation process.
"This year’s recipient of the Society for Industrial Archeology’s General Tools Award has been involved with machinery and engineering all his life and is a hands-on practitioner of industrial archeology with a prodigious knowledge of machinery of all types. A millwright and mechanical engineer by profession, he has achieved a wide recognition for his expertise in machinery restoration, millwrighting, and marine engineering.

A student with a Bachelor's degree in anthropology has acquired critical
analysis skills, oral and written communication skills, "people" skills, and a
great understanding of many different cultures, which have many applications in
public service, political activism and the private sector. An emphasis in Archaeology yields prospects for entry-level employment or degree-related careers with one of many Federal and State agencies and private cultural resource management firms. Biological and Medical Anthropologists have the skills which are useful in the growing sector of health related occupations and traditional research. Anthropology graduates are regarded as having excellent preparation for professional training in Law, Medicine, Public Health, School Administration, and Urban Planning.
