Offers architectural, urban design, planning, and interior design services. Project portfolio and architect biographies.
    http://www.architects-hgw.com/
This will be a message that explains that you do not have the appropirate resolutions to view the site. ARCHITECTS hanna gabriel wells is a diverse architectural firm with experience in many aspects of the built environment, including civic, commercial, institutional and residential architecture and interior design. The firm is committed to a collaborative approach to design where clients, consultants and builders become part of the design team, working hand-in-hand with the architects and engineers. Architects HGW was established in 1997 with J. Randel Hanna AIA, James Gabriel AIA and Matthew B. Wells AIA, as partners in charge; and is functionally organized as a design studio utilizing the talents of the entire staff.
The studio approach enables Architects-HGW to work as a closely-knit team with each architect contributing his or her best talents and professional expertise. The ideas which shape their work share a common interest in creating strong spatial relationships between each building and its surroundings. These ideas are heavily influenced by the subtle qualities of the Southern California climate, the character of the landscape, the exploration of material and construction, and the unique character of each client. Hanna Gabriel Wells has intentionally tried to pursue different building and project types, with the belief that non-specialization leads to broader more open-minded thinking. Each project can be seen with new eyes and thought about with questioning minds- defaults and formula methods are to be avoided.

    Matsuo Basho (1644-1694)
was one of the greatest Japanese poets. He elevated haiku to the level of serious poetry in numerous anthologies and travel diaries. Ihara Saikaku and the dramatist Chikamatsu Monzaemon , he was far from being an exponent of the new middle-class culture of the city dwellers of that day. Rather, in his poetry and in his attitude toward life he seemed to harken back to a period some 300 years earlier. An innovator in poetry, spiritually and culturally he maintained a great tradition of the past. The haiku, a 17-syllable verse form divided into successive phrases or lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, originated in the linked verse of the 14th century, becoming an independent form in the latter part of the 16th century. Arakida Moritake (1473-1549) was a distinguished renga (linked poem) poet who originated witty and humorous verses he called haikai, which later became synonymous with haiku Early Life and Works Basho was born in 1644 in Ueno, lga Province, part of present-day Mie Prefecture. He was one of six children in a family of samurai, descended it is said from the great Taira clan of the Middle Ages. As a youth, Basho entered feudal service but at the death of his master left it to spend much of his life in wandering about Japan in search of imagery. Thus he is known as a traveler as well as a poet, the author of some of the most beautiful travel diaries ever written in Japanese. Basho is thought to have gravitated toward Kyoto, where he studied the Japanese classics. Here, also, he became interested in the haiku of the Teitoku school, which was directed by Kitamura Kigin.

Formed the firm of Cowles and Mutscheller with George Mutscheller in 1908.
    Firm dissolved in 1936
Clarence Cowles moved to Saginaw in 1893. The first advertising for his services appears in Saginaw papers in the days following the fire of 20 May 1893.   He practiced independently until 1908 when he joined with George Mutscheller to form the firm of Cowles and Mutscheller.    In the first decade of the twentieth century, Clarence Cowles produced designs for a number of substantial private and public buildings.  Although he employed many different historically inspired styles, his work is characterized by structural innovation and imaginative manipulation of space. A 1915 article declared that “This firm has designed 1,600 buildings since its inception.  They are unquestionably the leading architects in this part of the country and have been remarkably successful.”     In the teens, Cowles and Mutscheller designed some of their finest buildings.  They progressively moved away from historical revival styles and developed a personal style based on  the American Arts and Crafts Movement.  In the late 1920s the office produced designs for three major buildings in the Art Deco style.

The fragmented novel Asakusa Kurenaidan (The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa, 1929-1930), was set in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, famous for its geisha houses, dancers, bars, prostitutes, and theaters. The novel was serialized in the Asashi Shimbun newspaper, bringing modernist, experimental fiction to a wider audience within Japan. Kawabata was married in 1931, and afterward settled in the ancient samurai capital of Kamakura, southwest of Tokyo, spending the winters in Zushi. During World War II, Kawabata traveled in Manchuria, and studied Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), an eleventh-century Japanese novel.
