ARCHITECTURE HISTORY
Fall of 1999 at Montgomery College
Required Journal Assignment
Journal Entry #1
As the first journal entry for class I thought it might be a good idea to give a little background about myself.
First, I thought I might talk about my job. I have worked for William Doggett Architects for over three years now. I started in High School as part of an internship. After a few summers and semesters there, I have been able to design and work on architecture projects. My architecture experciences are still few, but being able to practice is good for me because like that of many older and ancient architects that started out in an aprentice, they learned by example. Eventually I will move on, but this is my early years.
Journal Entry #2
Stone Revival , p.66 from Architecture Magazine, October 1992
Journal Entry #3
**NOTE: This observation orginally made on October 12th, 1996. This entry was made from notes taken at that time. Journal Entry #4 Taking a look at the book for our class I will have to say some of my favorite structures are that of the Metroplitian Cathedral (Paris) and Newton's Cenotaph (Paris) form Etienne - Louis Boullee. Most of his structures rival most Megolithic Period Structure in size. Moreover, the designes convey that such massive structures must be rather simplistic and have a straight-forward to realize its design intention. Though not a true "architect", Boullee was a great visionary that all architect strive to have such a vision. Some other of my favorite structures include the Pyramids at Giza, Amein Cathedral

26. ESALA, Edinburgh School Of Architecture And Landscape Architecture
The Department of Architecture offers an MA in Architectural History.
http://www.architecture.ed.ac.uk/
Welcome
Architecture and Landscape Architecture are disciplines dedicated to the art of building in its broadest sense. This encompasses the design of buildings, the spaces between them, as well as wider natural and urban environments. This definition implies a wide range of conditions: from the most intimate spaces of a dwelling, to complex public infrastructures and open spaces, to the heterogenous fabric of a city and wider territorial conditions.
This scope brings architecture and landscape architecture into contact with other
disciplines concerned with buildings, cities and open spaces, such as engineering,
construction, urban planning, environmental science, art history, and sociology. Architecture and Landscape Architecture necessarily engage with all of these neighbouring disciplines, but they are distinctive for their commitment to design as their specialist skill and knowledge base. Design is a mode of thinking and practice that combines historical and environmental knowledges, logical analysis and creativity. The Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), treasures the distinctiveness of design, and seeks to put it to work in critical, responsible, and
creative ways in the diverse conditions of contemporary metropolitan life.

Today's modern designs, however, are perhaps described as being inspired by the Bauhaus movement. The History of Iran Architecture Iranian or Persian architecture has been in existence since 5000 B.C. The History of Architecture Drafting Tracing the origins of architectural drafting is a murky task, for no one knows quite how early monuments, such as the Great Pyramids of Egypt were built or if there were any existing plans for the structure. A Night at the Fair Once again the fair–but differing from the fair of the afternoon as a girl in the daytime differs from her radiant presentation of herself at night. The substance of the cardboard booths and plaster palaces was gone, the forms remained. Outlined in lights, these forms suggested things more mysterious and entrancing than themselves, and the people strolling along the network of little Broadways shared this quality, as their pale faces singly and in clusters broke the half darkness.

A castle in Kyoto, Japan. Photo: Devendra Narayan Distinctly Japanese architecture is considered to have begun around 57 BC. The majority of structures before this time period were pit dwellings. But as time progressed, so did Japans architecture. Early forms of Japanese architecture shared a close relationship with Korean architecture. Korean influence is evident in various buildings, which were originally created between 57 and 665 BC. Some of the earliest known examples, built from stone, include Iksan and Miruksa. Timber buildings were also present during the time period. Although they have long since been destroyed, they were depicted in murals found in underground caves including Samschlich-ong, Yodongsonachong, and Yaksuri. Because the Japanese islands are of volcanic origin, structures of wooden timber have traditionally been the basis for architecture; there is little stone for building or carving in Japan. The architecture of wood was fully developed during the fifth century. Styles during this time period became more intricate. Architects added decorative gables, saddle roofs, and other details to their designs.
