Mac OS X is a uniquely powerful development platform, supporting multiple development technologies including UNIX, Java, the proprietary Cocoa and Carbon runtime environments, and a host of open source, web, scripting, database, and development technologies. Built around the integrated stack of graphics and media technologies including Core Image, Core Video, Core Audio and QuickTime, Mac OS X provides a solid foundation for developers to create great applications. Mac OS X Tiger also offers powerful user technologies like Spotlight and Dashboard that can be exploited by developers in their applications. For more information on exploring the technologies in Mac OS X, see the Mac OS X Getting Started page.
Aqua
Aqua is the overall appearance and behavior of Mac OS X. Aqua defines the standard appearance of specific user interface components such as windows, menus, and controls. It uses high-quality graphics and user-centric design to produce a user experience that is both functional and appealing.
Dashboard
Dashboard is a display and management system for Mac OS X desktop utilities, called widgets. Developers can create widgets, such as a clock or a calculator, to provide functionality that doesn't require the complexity of a large application.

http://academic.csuohio.edu/makelaa/lectures/architecture/index.html
INTRODUCTION This illustrated lecture explores traditional forms of Japanese architecture. The presentation does not take up the subject of modern or contemporary Japanese architecture. Instead it examines only traditional examples of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, aristocratic palaces and samurai mansions, castles, rural farmhouses and urban townhouses. First the materials and construction techniques employed in traditional forms of Japanese architecture are examined and illustrated. Then we turn our attention to the functional and symbolic uses of space within various types of traditional structures. Finally we learn to understand how traditional Japanese architecture can inspire us by learning what to look for and appreciate within a typical set of structures, rural and urban, sacred and secular, impoverished and aristocratic. Come, then, join us in an examination of what we can learn to appreciate and understand about Japan and its cultural roots from an exploration of traditional Japanese architecture! The HHS Enterprise Architecture
The HHS Enterprise Architecture (EA) provides a mechanism for understanding and managing complexity and change as it pertains to key HHS-wide business processes and their related IT support. The HHS EA aligns with the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) and is a strategic resource that helps HHS plan and implement information technology solutions and manage the resulting investment portfolio to meet mission and business needs. The HHS EA can guide IT investments and ensure alignment of the IT investment with HHS plans at both the strategic and detail levels. The HHS EA is also a core decision support tool that integrates enterprise information, planning, and management functions (including aspects of strategic planning, human capital, continuity of operations, security, investment, business processes redesign, information management, and facilities). The diagram below depicts the layers of the HHS architecture. Each layer of the architecture contains information specific to that category, and is related to other information across the architecture. The HHS EA aligns with the FEA and links to information about the FEA are provided below.

Stone, mortar, wood-these were the simple components used to construct some of the most heavily fortified structures ever created. Early castles relied on the surrounding landscape to provide much of the protection. Early castles were made of wood and built on hills of "mottes". Surrounded by a high, wooden palisade, motte and bailey castles were used widely until the Norman invasion of 1066. These fortifications proved too easy to burn, and stone was then used more frequently. Castles were rarely the most comfortable place to live, with only the lord and his family given adequate heat and other amenities. Medieval castles were built for safety, not comfort. Windows were little more than slits in the wall. Cold, stone floors and walls rarely kept in heat, and water had to be brought by the bucketful throughout the castle. Walls were built high to protect from advancing armies, and to provide needed lookout positions. The simple stone and mortar architecture made repairs fairly easy to make. It was not uncommon for stones to be used over and over with each successive castle built on the same location. Cannons and gunpowder made the castle ineffective and these large structures evolved in the later Middle Ages and Renaissance to become manor homes and palaces.

Architecture
Architecture is the use of artistic talent and technical knowledge. Apart from the design of individual buildings, architecture can embrace town planning, landscaping and even furniture design. Space and volume, light and shadow, materials and texture all play their part on the creative side, while technology, construction and cost are the more down-to-earth elements. Architectural works are perceived as cultural and historic symbols providing pointers for the understanding of historical civilizations. Thus travel guides often refer to architectural monuments when describing countries, regions, cities and culture. Privacy Contact Enter your search terms Submit search form

Ancient Chinese Architecture
CHINESE HISTORY STONE AGE CHINA SHANG DYNASTY CHOU DYNASTY ... MING DYNASTY Most people in ancient China could not afford to live in fancy houses . They lived in small houses made of mudbrick , with only one room and a dirt floor, just the way most people in the Roman Empire or West Asia or Africa lived, and the way most people in the world still live today. In Northern China, the doors of these houses usually faced south, to keep out the cold north wind Hall of Supreme Harmony, Forbidden City (Beijing, 1450 AD) Rich people had fancier houses, and people also built fancy temples and palaces. All ancient Chinese architecture was built according to strict rules of design that made Chinese buildings follow the ideas of Taoism or other Chinese philosophies . The first design idea was that buildings should be long and low rather than tall - they should seem almost to be hugging you. The roof would be held up by columns, and not by the walls. The roof should seem to be floating over the ground. The second design idea was symmetry: both sides of the building should be the same, balanced, just as Taoism emphasized balance. Even as early as the

  • ABOUT US
  • Designed from the outset to house the United States Congress, the Capitol was a bold experiment in a new nation. The building has been enlarged and modified over the years, and it contains some of the most important spaces in American history and architecture. As the Capitol Campus has been expanded, new buildings have reflected the taste and values of their time, offering the latest amenities available while retaining a connection to the Capitol's neoclassical forms. The United States Capitol Dome The cast-iron dome of the United States Capitol, constructed between 1855 and 1866, may well be the most famous man-made landmark in America. It is such a fitting finale for the building it crowns, so familiar and dignified, that it seems surprising that its design and construction came late in the Capitol's architectural evolution. Only the marble west front terraces (1884-1892) and the east front extension (1958-1962) are more recent additions to the Capitol than its dome. Rotunda lying in state of distinguished citizens. Its lower walls hold historic paintings, and a frescoed band, or "frieze," depicting significant events in American history rings its upper walls. Index of Terms
This is an effort to provide shared context and promote cohesive discussion and coherent specifications. For an informal glossary of terms, see: glossary of web terms . See also: Outline Currently, this is just an alphabetical index of terms, with references to documents where they are defined in different ways. The intent is to come up with one comprehensive, consistent terminology that specifications will draw from and add to (hopefully, in an automated fashion, eventually!). I'd also like to formalize this knowledge using something like Larch or KIF (e.g. Formal Treatment of XML and Related Technologies
