Argentina Culture: What It's Really Like
Argentina culture is unique, but at the same time quite like that of other South American countries. You will find that the ethnic traditions that make up the people here are one of the strongest influences on their culture. Like most other North and South American countries, Argentina is a melting pot of cultures. You will find many European immigrants have established this country, bringing with them all the tradition from those countries. There are also some African influences and some Asian influences evident as well. Our Argentinean Friends If you've never met anyone from Argentina before you are certainly in for a treat. The people here are extremely warm hearted and they love to party and dance! The country may have a reputation for being laid back, but don't let that fool you - Argentineans are very active people who really do enjoy life for all that it's worth. Argentina's largest population is of Spanish decent. Many of the older buildings as well as some of the more modern styles are very much Spanish influenced. Other evidence of the true culture of this country is found within those buildings. For example, many of the museums and galleries showcase the love of art, and offer many heritage based themes to them. Music is a large part of the Argentina culture, too. You will find that the tango is truly a national trend. When you stay "tango" here, though, you are not only talking about the actual music but also the lyrics that go with it. Many other European influenced music genres are found, too.

Argentina : Culture
Argentina is a nation with a valuable Spanish heritage, strongly determined since the 19th century by European, notably Italian, immigration. A lively interest is maintained in the nations history, particularly as symbolized by the gaucho. In the fine arts, the most valuable model has been France; only in folk art has there been remarkable determine from Native American cultures. Because almost all Argentines are descendants of immigrants from Europe, their culture has a more distinctly European orientation than that of other Latin Americans. The leading library of Argentina is the National Library in Buenos Aires, which has about 1.89 million volumes. Prominent among the many museums in Buenos Aires are the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences, the National Museum of Fine Arts, and such private collections as the International Art Gallery. By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Modern Argentina is a nation of immigrants. During its history, people from all over the world came to live in Argentina. People from Europe, Africa, and elsewhere have immigrated to Argentina. Because of this, much of Argentina's culture is a reflection of European and African culture. A lot of what you can see and hear in modern Argentina has its roots in Europe and Africa.
One of Argentina's most popular and well-known cultural icons is a dance. This beautiful and romantic dance is called the tango. Maybe you've heard of this dance. It has been featured in many movies and is popular all over the world. The birth of the tango happened in Argentina more than 100 years ago.
In the late nineteenth century, immigrants from Europe and slaves from Africa were pouring into Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires. Many, if not most, of the new immigrants were very poor. To escape the troubles of their daily lives, many went to nightclubs and bars in Buenos Aires. These clubs were rough placeslots of criminals could be found in these clubs. People also found romance at these clubs.

CULTURE Probably the best known manifestation of Argentine popular culture is the tango - a dance and music which has captured the imagination of romantics worldwide. Folk music is also thriving. Sport is extremely important to the Argentines and soccer is more of a national obsession than a game. Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, and the exploits of Diego Maradona, (the most famous Argentinian since Che Guevara) have kept soccer fans, paparazzi and columnists busy for the past ten years. Meat dominates Argentina's menus, and 'meat' means beef. Mixed grills (parillada) are apparently the way to go, serving up a cut of just about every part of the animal: tripe, intestines, udders - the lot. In this vegetarian's nightmare, Italian favourites, such as gnocchi (noquis) , are a welcome alternative. Exquisite Argentine ice cream

Know Argentina
Learn Spanish in Argentina and discover this beautiful and enormous country enormous country, eighth largest in the world, and second only to Brazil in terms of size and population in South America. The country is surrounded by Chile to the west, and Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and the South Atlantic to the north and to the east. Argentina also shares the offshore island territory of Tierra del Fuego with Chile, and continues to dispute the ownership of the Islas Malvinas (known as the Falkland Islands to the British). In the early 1980's this dispute led to the short-lived Falklands War. To the north, Argentina has a wonderfully diverse topography which is affected greatly by both latitude and altitude. While most of Argentina lies within South America's temperate zone, climates range from tropical in the north to sub-polar in the south. In general, Argentina can be divided into six geographical zones: the fertile central Pampas, marshy Mesopotamia in the northeast, the densely forested Chaco region of the north, high plateaus in the northwest, the mighty Andes to the west, and the stunningly beautiful windswept plateaus of Patagonia.

La Plata Cathedral Historically, the Catholic religion played a very important part in politics and law. Before changes were made to the Constitution in 1994, the two top leaders of Argentina had to be Roman Catholic. Today, although officially 90% of Argentinians are Roman Catholic, fewer than 20% attend hurch regularly. Most go for weddings, funerals and major feast days. Many Argentinians make annual pilgrimages to holy sites and local shrines. The most popular place is Lujn, 65 km west of Buenos Aires . Each year, thousands of people make the pilgrimage on foot from Buenos Aires to honour the Patron Saint of Argentina, the Virgin of Lujn. According to tradition, in 1620 a statue of the Virgin was being carried from town to town in a cart. The cart got stuck at Lujn, Buenos Aires Province , and could not be moved. The people built a chapel for the Virgin to protect the statue. Today there is a large basilica where the chapel once stood.

Probably the best beef in the world Most Argentinians eat four meals each day. The diet may differ in different regions. Desayuno (breakfast) is a light meal of rolls and jam with coffee. For almuerzo (lunch), many Argentinians eat meat and vegetables or salads. After work but before dinner, people go to confiteras (cafs) to drink espresso and eat picadas, small dishes of cheese, mussels, salami, anchovies, olives and peanuts. Cena (dinner) in the evening is the largest meal of the day and almost always includes beef. Did you know? The confiteras (cafs) of Buenos Aires play an important role in social, business and cultural life. In confiteras people meet friends and business associates, workers take coffee breaks, retired people play dominoes, and theatregoers have coffee after a show. Certain confiteras have been associated with particular artistic, literary, political and student groups.
The tradition of eating beef began in the 19th century, when there were thousands of cattle in the Pampas region. Beef was roasted on a spit on an open fire. When it was done, people sliced off chunks. They ate by holding the end of a chunk in their mouths and cutting off the rest with a knife.

Country Info - Argentina Overview Culture and Society
SOCIETY AND CULTURE click on the image to enlarge As varied as Argentinas geography is, so is its culture. It is composed of an ethnic mix of foreigners from Europe, including people from Italy, Germany, England, Spain, Basque, and the Irish. Because of the strong European migration, this influenced the demise of pre-Columbian cultures, leaving the present lack of dominant indigenous populations. Each culture established their own role throughout the countrythe Basque and Irish controlled sheep farming, Germans and Italians established farms, and the British predominately invested in developing the countrys infra-structure. Small populations of Japanese, Chileans, Bolivians, Paraguayans, and Uruguayans are also found scattered throughout the country.
Due to the array of cultural diversity, a particularly diverse arts, crafts, and music scene exists. There are many cinemas and galleries in major urban centers and are popular with the majority of the eliteseen as a type of status symbol. The
