Geography and Agriculture The geography of Egypt is deeply important in understanding why the Egyptians centered their lives around the Nile. Both before and during the use of canal irrigation in Egypt, the Nile Valley could be separated into two parts, the River Basin or the flat alluvial (or black land soil), and the Red Land or red desert land. The River basin of the Nile was in sharp contrast to the rest of the land of Egypt and was rich with wild life and water fowl, depending on the waxing and waning cycles of the Nile. In contrast, the red desert was a flat dry area which was devoid of most life and water, regardless of any seasonal cycle. The Nile in it's natural state goes through periods of inundation and relinquishment. The inundation of the Nile-a slightly unpredictable event- was the time of greatest fertility for Egypt. As the banks rose, the water would fill the man-made canals and canal basins and would water the crops for the coming year. However, if the inundation was even twenty inches above or below normal, it could have massive consequences upon the Egyptian agricultural economy. Even with this variability, the Egyptians were able to easily grow tree crops and vegetable gardens in the lower part of the Nile Valley, while at higher elevations, usually near levees, the Nile Valley was sparsely planted. Agricultural crops were not the mainstay of the ancient Egyptian diet. Rather, the Nile supplied a constant influx of fish which were cultivated year around. In addition to fish, water fowl and cattle were also kept by the Egyptians. Flocks of geese were raised from the earliest times and supplied eggs, meat and fat. However, the domestic fowl didn't make its appearance until

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Argentina is a big country. It has lots of interesting and exciting places. Argentina is located in South America. It is the sixth largest country in the world! Argentina has many different kinds of land. In the north, there are rainforests. In the west are the Andes Mountains. Along Argentina's east side is the Atlantic Ocean.
There is another interesting place located in its very southern end. This place is an island. It's called Tierra del Fuego. If it seems hard to pronounce, don't worry. It's a Spanish phrase that means "land of fire." What makes Tierra del Fuego so interesting? The land is beautiful. There are lots of mountains and beaches there. But there is something else that's very special about Tierra del Fuego.
Have you been someplace far away? Someplace that seemed a long way from the rest of the world? Maybe you've climbed a tree, or walked out in the woods. Can you remember what it was like being so far away? That's what it's like in Tierra del Fuego. Why? Because Tierra del Fuego has the most southern city in the world! It is called Ushuaia. There is even a train there called the "end of the world" train!

    Argentina Geography:
The fundamental characteristic of Argentina is the enormous contrast between the immense eastern plains and the imposing mountain range of the Andes to the west. This is the frontier with Chile and it has the highest peak in the Western hemisphere: the Aconcagua, 6.959 metres high.
    LOCATION, AREA AND FRONTIERS
Located in the southern part of South America and thus in the southern hemisphere, Argentina has an area of almost 3.8 million square kilometres, of which 2.8 are on the continent and the remainder in the Antarctic. Its length of 3.800 Km goes from latitude 22º to 55º. Its frontier with Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile has a perimeter of 9.376 Km. The coast on the Atlantic Ocean is 4.725 Km long.
In its passage from Jujuy to Tierra del Fuego the range presents marvellous contrasts, the plateaux of the Northwest, the lake region, the forests and the glaciers of the Patagonian Andes.
To the north, Chaco is a forested area which follows the rivers Bermejo, Salado and Pilcomayo.
