Their territories expropriated over decades and their chiefs militarily defeated, the indigenous nations were incorporated as subjugated peoples and insecure occupiers of their own lands; they were forced to adopt a foreign religion and way of life. Their autonomous socio-economic systems were destroyed and, ever since, they have been subordinated to the processes of capitalist expansion and contraction, despite the fact that their food security depends more on hunting, fishing, gathering and small crop-growing in the north and sheep and cattle rearing in the south.
Many Argentinians believe there are no indigenous people in their country, either because the majority have died out or are on the verge of doing so, or because "their descendants" were assimilated into Western civilisation long ago and they now live like any other citizen. Generalised stereotypes have forced many indigenous people to defensively hide their identity in order to avoid being subjected to racial discrimination. Even so, the use of pejorative terms likening the Indians/indigenous to lazy, idle, dirty, ignorant and savage are common in everyday language.

Conflict resolution in Argentina
In many places in Argentina, particularly in locations with large indigenous populations, conflict is characterized by self-damaging violence. In the recent past, violence has consistently bred more violence, continuing in a cycle that harms people and dismantles optimism. IMADR’s Latin American Base, located in Argentina, organizes and participates in activities to develop modes of conflict resolution for indigenous people. Activities are organized and facilitated together with local partners, and serve to strengthen networks among those local groups and put the decisions and opinions of indigenous peoples first. In coming together to organize and participate in community workshops, indigenous peoples have carved out a space for their self-empowerment, and strengthened the basis for a path forward, toward more constructive forms of conflict resolution. edit

Diaguita
The Diaguita , also called Diaguita -Calchaquí , are a group of South American indigenous peoples. The Diaguita culture developed between the 8th and 16th centuries in what are now the provinces of Salta, Catamarca, La Rioja and Tucumán in northwestern Argentina, and in the Atacama and Coquimbo regions of northern Chile.
History
Diaguita tribes were sometimes confederated, and sometimes at war against each other. When the Inca started extending their empire southwards during the 15th century, the Diaguita fiercely resisted the invasion. They were unique at the time for their lack of a caste system, and lack of gold or other sumptuous goods. They tended to live in clans. For the most part the men were monogamous, with chiefs possibly practicing bigamy. They later fell to the Incas, though

Native American
Dictionary: Native American Home Library Dictionary n. A member of any of the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The ancestors of the Native Americans are generally considered by scientists to have entered the Americas from Asia by way of the Bering Strait sometime during the late glacial epoch. Native American Native American adj. USAGE NOTE Many Americans have come to prefer Native American over Indian both as a term of respect and as a corrective to the famous misnomer bestowed on the peoples of the Americas by a geographically befuddled Columbus. There are solid arguments for this preference. Native American eliminates any confusion between indigenous American peoples and the inhabitants of India, making it the clear choice in many official contexts. It is also historically accurate, despite the insistence by some that Indians are no more native to America than anyone else since their ancestors are assumed to have migrated here from Asia. But one sense of native is "being a member of the original inhabitants of a particular place," and Native Americans' claim to being the original inhabitants of the Americas is unchallenged. • Accuracy and precision aside, however, the choice between these two terms is often made as a matter of principle. For many

    Protest over child mummies
They are the most perfectly preserved mummies in the world - their skin so intact that they look practically alive, their clothes still bright and new, the remains of their last meal still undigested inside their stomachs. But plans to put on display the remains of three 500-year-old Inca children have run into resistance from Argentinian indigenous groups who consider the project an insult to their ancestors and even some scientists who have expressed misgivings about the project. The mummies were found in 1999 by a National Geographic team on the 22,000-foot (6,700m) peak of Llullaillaco, a mountain in the Andes between Argentina and Chile. The three children, two girls and a boy aged between six and 15, were left on the peak to freeze to death in the 15th century, shortly before the arrival of Spanish colonists in America, apparently as a human sacrifice. But a combination of high altitude, low oxygen and humidity levels as well as zero-degree temperatures has produced a near-miraculous preservation.
