Fiambre Aleman - Savoury Pancake Stack
Pancakes! Many people think pancakes are only made for maple syrupy breakfast fun... but in Argentinean cooking I have seen pancakes used for many different purposes! For super special treats sometimes mum would make pancakes with dulce de leche rolled into the middle - it was to die for... (my mouth is watering as I write this!!). However one of the things I always remembered on festive occasions, which she was always asked to bring to other people's parties was Fiambre Aleman... translated literally it means German Ham... but in actuality it is a wonderfully easy, but incredibly flavourism, savoury pancake stack! It was a recpe she learnt from her mum, my Grandmother Victoria.
Fiambre Aleman
Ingredients
Pancakes:
  • 150g of plain flour 1 pinch of salt 3 eggs 1 teaspoon of butter Milk - as needed
Filling:
  • 1 red capsicum (canned is fine or roasted in oven (allow to cool down before use) 1 can of tuna in oil - drained 5 boiled eggs (leave one for decorating the finished fiambre) 100g shredded or thinly sliced ham 100 g shredded cheddar cheese 100g chopped green olives 3/4 cup of chopped celery 1/2 cup of chopped spanish onions egg mayonnaise
Make your pancakes...mix the ingredients in a bowl, adding milk as needed to thin the mixture to a sligtly thickened pancake mix. Pour into the pan to make thin pancakes.

Ancient Times and Influences on Argentine Cooking
Argentina's political history is somewhat complicated. It is relatively young, only coming into being as an independent country in the early 19th Century. However as with most countries, its history has had a direct effect on its culinary culture.

A triplet of requests - poetry, Argentinean cooking, and genetic epidemiology
My summer hopes include the following - attending a poetry workshop, learning to cook the cuisine of Argentina, and conversing with a genetic epidemiologist or two. I've got some feelers out for the last two, but I welcome more leads.
Any poetry workshops happening this summer - preferably in July/Aug?
Any genetic epidemiologists on DCF willing to chat with a bioethicist over paletas or horchata this summer? My treat.
Cooking lessons? I've got a slew of recipes for Argentinean cooking, but I want lessons - learning by doing is my thing. Milanesa, noquis de papas, guisos, empanadas. I learned the dulce de leche in the can trick when I was ten... Tags: Share Twitter Facebook

Islamorada Florida Restaurants
The good new is that Islamorada, Florida restaurants are quite diverse - from Argentinian to Japanese to Louisianna, there are all kinds of taste sensations. The Islamorada, Florida restaurants tend to be seafood-oriented, but you can still find chicken and beef, if that is your pleasure. There's also at least one restaurant that offers vegetarian meals. Keep in mind that if you've gone fishing (or should I say "catching"), many Islamorada restaurants will cook up your catch for you. Just make sure what you caught is the eating kind of fish! As always, make sure you try the key lime pie at least once while you're in the Florida Keys. But do also check out the dessert menus at some of these restaurants they look mighty tasty! What Should I Wear? Not to worry, the one thing that all Florida Keys restaurants have in common is the dress code Keys casual. While you don't want to show up in a bathing suit and flip-flops, you also don't need to get dressy either...unless you want to. Cool pants and an island-y shirt for the guys and a sundress or pants and an island-y blouse for the ladies is as fancy as it gets! Most of the time shorts and a nice t-shirt will do you just fine.

Expeditions Aconcagua Vacas Valley Our Polish Traverse Route itinerary
On arrival to the airport, an AEA Expeditions representative will be waiting for you, to be sure you'll get the right hotel at the right time. During late afternoon we use to enjoy a welcome brew with the whole group and doing the equipment check out, and a "welcome" dinner in Mendoza in the several restaurants near the city.
At Midday, we drive to the Aconcagua Park permit office, located in the downtown, and them in the same vehicle, we drive towards Penitentes sky resort. Once we arrive to today's destination, there is a lot to do organizing mule loads. Our leaders will take care of it, thus there are always willing hands aiming to help us in this duty, feeling a part of the expedition as a whole.
We overnight in a refuge dormitory style.
We drive to the head of valley, 12 km away from town, and begin our trek. All of our expedition food and equipment will be carried by mules, to join us at Pampa De Leńas by mid afternoon, where we'll get access to our gear. This way there won't be much to carry, making our trek more relaxing and less energy consuming.
We continue our approach walking up the Rio de Las Vacas, it's and enjoyable 17km trek to the Casa de Piedra(3300m) ( house of stones), near where we set camp. The first view of Aconcagua east face and Polish Glacier will arise between the mountains of Relinchos Valley. It's for certain one of the most impressing views of the Colossus.

What's Up in the Garden This Week with Sally Kendall: Kale!
Kale is sooooo good for you For a quick dinner I cut up Italian sausage (5 or 6 links) into 1/2 inch slices and sauté it until done. Then I add a few cloves of garlic chopped up. When the garlic is softened I add a huge amount of chopped kale and toss until wilted. I then toss that with a pasta (such as rigatoni, geminelli, or bowties). Yum! To add another dimension, try adding a couple of teaspoonfuls of balsamic vinegar after the kale has wilted. How about Kale Crunch where you bake to kale to a crisp. If the recipe was not from Molly Katzen (of Moosewood fame) I would be highly skeptical, but I think I will give it a try :-) Bitter Greens with Sweet Onions and Sour Cherries - another recipe from Molly Katzen.
