Most Popular Digg this New tests sought for Arizona's charter schools Association seeks tougher oversight to lift standards by Pat Kossan - Apr. 26, 2009 12:00 AM The Arizona Republic Owners of some of Arizona's best charter schools are taking unprecedented steps to strengthen the oversight and quality of the charter-school system, which could lead to the closing of more schools. About a dozen owners have taken over the once small, mostly volunteer Arizona Charter Schools Association, an advocacy group, with a newfound purpose: to push tougher enforcement of state standards and stricter accountability in Arizona's 475 charter schools. The state's charter-school system has been saddled for years with an image of poor performance and sometimes shoddy financial practices, although some charters perform as well or better than district schools. The board, which took over the association 18 months ago, has hired eight professional staff members and obtained private grant money to bring about the changes. It also hired a lobbying firm to work the halls at the state Capitol. One of its biggest accomplishments so far is unusual for an advocacy group: It created a sophisticated data model to measure how well Arizona's district and charter schools and teachers are doing their jobs.

Veterans Service Officers Three Arizona Charter Schools Fined for Asbestos Violations The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, recently levied fines against three Arizona charter school operators for their 2008 violations regarding AHERA - the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act - which regulates the confirmation, inspection, cataloging, auditing and handling of asbestos in all U.S. schools, whether public, private or parochial. This law, which went into effect in 1986, outlines eight steps schools must take to insure that students, staff and visitors are not exposed to hazardous asbestos. These are: Designating an individual to supervise asbestos activities and ensure AHERA compliance. Instruct maintenance staff, via a two-hour course, on asbestos awareness and handling. Conduct an initial survey to determine where asbestos has been used on school premises. Conduct six-month periodic surveillance of asbestos sources. Conduct additional inspections once every three years under the auspices of a certified asbestos inspection planner.
