zSB(3,3) Arizona offers resident students the opportunity to take online public school courses for free. Below is a list of no-cost online schools currently serving elementary and high school students in Arizona. In order to qualify for the list, schools must meet the following qualifications: classes must be available completely online, they must offer services to state residents, and they must be funded by the government. Virtual schools listed may be charter schools, state-wide public programs, or private programs that receive government funding.

About Online Charter Schools and Online Public Schools
Many states now offer tuition-free online schools for resident students under a certain age (often 21). Most virtual schools are charter schools; they receive government funding and are run by a private organization. Online charter schools are subject to fewer restrictions than traditional schools. However, they are reviewed regularly and must continue to meet state standards.

7-23-09: Guidelines for $5 million have been established for small school districts interested in solar power. Click  here for more information.
Funding will be divided into two pools, 70 percent for school energy efficiency projects and 30 percent for solar projects. The School Facilities Board (SFB) will distribute the funds to local school districts through a competitive grant process. The energy efficiency program will be based on the framework of the successful FY 2007 SFB Energy Pilot program. SFB staff recommends basing the solar program around smaller (less than 30,000 sq. feet) schools. Dedicating the solar funds to smaller schools will broaden the impact of the program. For example, if $3 million was dedicated to a small school solar photovoltaic program, the program could provide 20 percent of the needed electricity for 15 schools.

What does it take to get great results in schools with mostly low-income, minority students? The "Beat the Odds" research study found six keys to success at Arizona schools where student achievement exceeded expectations. The Beat the Odds Institute provides K-12 principals with the training, assistance and support they need to apply the research findings in their own schools.
    BTO SUCCESS STORY: WESTWIND PRIMARY
For nearly a decade, Danelia Williams dreamed of becoming a school principal so she could make a difference in student learning and expand kids' options for the future. Three years ago, her dream came true when she was promoted to principal of Westwind Primary School in Phoenix's Pendergast Elementary School District. Her dream came with its share of challenges, however. Principal Williams received the support she needed from her district and the Beat the Odds Institute.
