    AEPA Exam
The AEPA test is required by the Arizona State Board of Education as part of the teacher certification process. Each teacher candidate must successfully pass a subject knowledge assessment and an assessment for professional knowledge. These criterion-referenced, objective-based AEPA tests are created with a foundation created from standard qualifications, the curriculum being used and the subject area material learned in college. Every AEPA exam is based on particular objectives for that test. These general objectives are made up of:
    • An objective account that generally gives a definition of the material that a beginning teacher is required to understand, and
    • A descriptive account, including examples.
AEPA groups the tests as follows:
    • Professional knowledge - This examination has around 100 multiple-choice items and three written response topics.
    • Subject knowledge - The majority of these tests have around 100 multiple-choice items and one written response topic. Assessments for German, French or Spanish have around 55 multiple-choice questions, some of which are designed to measure reading and listening in the language of choice. They also have one written response, as well as a spoken portion.
    • Constitutions of the United States and Arizona - This examination has around 100 multiple-choice items.

Basic Steps for Initial Arizona Teacher Certification:
Initial certification for secondary educators in Arizona lasts two years and is nonrenewable although it can be extended for two more years. You must hold a bachelor's degree, complete a teacher preparation program or have 30 hours of education courses including eight practicum hours, pass the Professional and Subject Knowledge Secondary portions of the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment(AEPA), and pass a background check. If your subject area is not tested, you need 24 hours of subject related courses. You must complete Structured English Immersion (SEI) training and courses on the Arizona and US Constitutions.
    Information for Teachers Certified Elsewhere:
If you are certified elsewhere and move to Arizona, you will be issued a two-year provisional certificate. You must have passed a comparable Professional Knowledge and Subject Area Secondary exam from another state. If this was taken more than seven years ago you must also show five years of full-time teaching experience. However, if you are National Board Certified, this will replace the two exam qualifications. You must complete three semester hours in Structured English Immersion (SEI) training. You must also complete courses on the Arizona and US Constitutions though you have one year to fulfill this requirement.
